Eragon is...a fantasy fan fiction written by a teenager whose dad happens to own a publishing company. It's a Mary Sue story. Main character finds dragon egg, becomes dragon rider, becomes elf. I read the first and second book several years ago, and the only character that I thought was a realistic protagonist was the main character's brother.

I agree.

That's why you should think of The Lord of the Rings instead!
And yes, post it here and we will rip it apart.
Say, why do you even have to deflate it? As long as you're not too full of yourself and undermine everyone else you're good to go.

Read the work of others. Others who are published, and don't suck. That should deflate your ego quite suitably. It sure did mine. In fact, it made me give up entirely and become the miserable, uncreative wreck that I am today.

Hopefully this does a bit of work, I don't mean any of it but maybe it'll hit home. What I'm about to say, may be harmful, so if you don't want a deflated ego then don't read on:

You are nothing, and will never amount to anything. Your works are complete guttershite compared to the works of great authors. Your characters are flat and couldn't box their way out of a simple sentence. Your grammar is terrible, I mean how dare you do anything. You will never be loved for your writing and while other people's names will echo you will be nothing but dust in the wind.

Write something you think is good, submit it for publishing. You'll get rejected more times than you can count.

I believe there was someone famous who kept getting turned down but eventually it got published and it became famous I can't remember the author or name of the book

I usually play some mind games. Pick an argument that I know how to defend and win, and systematically destroy the counter argument, or with more creative ways such as randomly ignoring a person for no reason making him/her paranoid or making that person feel isolated by talking about something he/she knows nothing of. Each technique is very effective.

I have a nicely groomed ego myself, so that's a bit hypocritical.

Ever get that paranoid feeling in the back of your mind that you actually aren't very good at what you're doing, and any praise you get is just given out of pity? Just listen to that, that always gets rid of my ego.

Publish some of your work on here and we'll all rip it to shreds. I am really good a criticizing other people's work! Personally, I try to not let my author ego inflate by reading published works a lot and reminding myself I'm not this good yet. It just gives me the kick in the butt I need to work harder to get better.
