How do you feel about DLC?

Do people generally prefer small episodic content such as the Fallout 3 episodes or larger items such as GTA's or would people just rather DLC went away as it gives delevopers the option to release incomplete stories i.e. Prince of Persia?

Personally I like the trickle of Fallout 3 extras so that method of delivering additional content suits me.

Also, I feel sorry for PS3 owners who probably at this point despise most DLC.

I'm not against DLC and I'm not against paid DLC. I am against the Prince of Persia thing, where they basically forced people to give them extra money to see the true ending of the game. Not cool in the slightest.

DLC should only consist of pretty useless stuff and never new endings or additional gameplay. That is to say, unless it's free, since then it's okay to expand the game later through DLC.

The only exception would be if it had expanded gameplay, new story and maybe even more, á la GTA4: The lost and damned (haven't played GTA4 at all, making assumptions here). Then it's pretty much a new game using the same engine and is thus, in my opinion, worthy to have an additional price.

I think Bethesda got it down perfectly. Give people a full game worthy of 60 bucks, then offer a little extra for, well, a little extra. The biggest offenders right now are Capcom, probably. If something is finished by the time you release the game, you're supposed to make it accessible on the fucking disc, not charge people 5 bucks to "unlock" it. That's greed, plain and fucking simple.

Screw DLC and go for expansion packs instead. I don't feel like downloading stuff.

Well, before there was DLC, the developers used to finish their games.

As long as it really is DLC then I am fine with it. Too many games release so-called "DLC" about a month after the game is out, where it's quite obvious it was ready before the games release and is just used to squeeze some more money out of customers.

I love the concept of DLC, but I reckon that there is some abuse from dev/publishers. However, it was not an outrage to me that the horse armor was already on Oblivion's disc. I see this as a way to test the market, see if there are buyers, and then provide more like they did. However, the MP thing from Resident Evil is plain cheap. I just like seeing more contents for the games I like. Mass Effect lacks guns annd armors, this could have been handled with DLC, for instance. DLC is fairly new, I think that the stupid publishers will get things straight, eventually. But they ARE stupid, so it will take more time that it should.

I love the idea. I'm a gamer who has lived on mods for decades.

The new embracement of it, cuts wasting resources as there is no need to print copies and ship them. It allows the developer to get a bigger cut and encourages them not to rush games or bloat them with unessential content that otherwise don't fit.

However I don't like this new development of developers nickel and diming players for the good stuff. Things that should have been in the original release come way after for a fee. scnj listed a great example of this. EA's Sims franchise is guilty too.

I also don't like this favoritism and exclusive content. We all know people who are so obsessed, they actually pick up multiple copies of the same game on different platforms just to enjoy the different content. It's their money and their loss right? Sadly some of these friends are in financial troubles now.

I like the idea, but as it was said, companies are rushing games now knowing that they can make some DLC later on.
The only DLC I like are the ones like in Fable 2 or Halo 3. The Fallout 3 DLC really didn't do much and it was boring to me. At least I only bought two of those. I don't plan on getting anything from Bethesda unless it's from an Elder Scrolls game from now on. Look at how short the Fallout 3 DLCs are from the Oblivion ones and look at the prices...

It depends on the DLC to be honest. Releasing patches to fix things should not be allowed, you should have the game working perfectly fine before its released. Additional features and parts to the game are great parts of DLC.

The idea of DLC is not a bad one, in theory. However, in practice it is usually overpriced. You don't get nearly enough content for the money spent and generally get to feel like a milked cow. Furthermore, it tends to serve as an excuse for devs to leave stuff out of the game so they can charge you for it later.

Take FO3 for instance. While I love the game, the default "ending" is crap to say the least and it is clear as day that it wasn't originally intended. You aren't even allowed to continue exploring after the main story ends. Then along comes Broken Steel and suddenly the main plot is expanded and the entire thing doesn't feel like a decapitated chicken anymore. Now, this either means that Bethesda are amateurs who screwed up the initial release, or it means that they wanted to charge you extra to see the end of the game. Hmmm... I wonder which of the two options it could be?

I don't pay for DLC. Ever. I torrent the stuff. I've yet to see a DLC worth its price in cash...

Free ones are cool though.

It's good as long as its done right.

GOOD EXAMPLE: Fallout 3 and Grand theft auto IV's DLC.

BAD EXAMPLE: EA's "DLC" Street Fighter's and Oblivion's DLC (costume packs), RE5's DLC (It's not on the disc! Later.... "OH FINE IT'S ON THE DISC JUST PAY 800 FUCKING POINTS GODDAMMIT.")

All DLC should consist entirely of horse armour. For every game. What do I think of GTAIV's DLC? Needs more horse armour.

Ok, ok, for real: I like the idea. I think it's a really good thing, and I think it gives the developers the chance to add cool features to their game that might not have made the launch window, whether it's just a little update or a full-blown overhaul - there's a place and a price for either one. For a physical, boxed expansion pack, by contrast, anything less than a big, comprehensive upgrade for a significant price is not worth the production and distribution costs. Obviously if the publisher overcharges for a minor update, it's bad, but that's their fault for abusing a good system. Corporate greed is a lot older than DLC, that's for sure.

The digital distribution system is also great in that it reduces overheads for game distribution, allowing low-selling titles to be more financially viable, and reduces or eliminates developers' dependency on publishers - see Valve and Stardock.

So yes, I like digital distribution and I like DLC. And yet... I've only ever bought one item of DLC. Weird.

To be fair to them, DLC stands for DownLoadable Content. It doesn't necessarily imply that it has to have been made after the game was made. It's not a patch, and it's a broader term than "expansion pack". Ok, I'll grumble too if I think a developer has left something out of a game on purpose, but as long as it's a "nice bonus" rather than a "must have feature to make this fricking game worth playing", it's their prerogative. Better that they sell it separately than not offer it at all because it's unprofitable.

Don't feel sorry for me, I despised (what's now considered) dlc before I decided to get a ps3 and honestly, when the 360 exclusivity runs out, I feel the same way.
I would've felt differently (envious) if the GTA dlc added a land mass or any of the things I thought GTA4 was missing: rampages, miniguns, businesses, etc, etc. But I'm not sure that would've been satisfactory either as those are feature that should've come with the original purchase price of a GTA, not $20 more.
And I don't hate all dlc but lets face it, you get a hell of a lot less now for $20 than you used to: you would get a whole new game (not just new missions in the same setting) but in the past 10 years the value of dlc has been going down. Now, you have to pay $5-$10 for little things you used to (and pc games sometimes still) get for free.
I also think a lot of publishers look at it as an opportunity to siphon some more cash out of the hardcore gamer crowd who (in todays marketplace) come off as a bunch of suckers. Before dlc came to the consoles, a game on a console had to have plenty of content and work correctly.
Not to say that there's no good dlc this gen but for the most part, you would be much better off spending your $5-$10 buying a whole game off of psn/xbla.

DLC is ok as long as it isnt overpriced, what does annoy me though is when a company realeses a game the immedietly realeses a DLC for it ie that new riddick thing

I dislike the vast majority of DLC, I would prefer if they just ditched the idea, but I guess they make plenty of cash out of it.

DLC is a fine idea, but rather than expand on old games, why don't the developers focus on making new, original games.

What about downloadable expansion packs. Cause that how most companies are doing it today.
