How do you feel about dragons?

In just about every fantasy world you will find a dragon, something that resembles a dragon, or a reference to dragons. Not saying dragons are bad, just cliché.

Nowadays with the never ending spew of fantasy books, movies, games and such what isn't cliche? The reason they are in everything is because they are awesome and make whatever they are in better (if done right).

OT: Dragons are my favorite mythical creatures when they look the way I think they should. The red dragon in the opening post its pretty spot on although it looks a little to aquatic dinosaur for me. Its head/neck crest is too big. That might be uncomfortable to sit on.

The Dragon Riders of Pern series I think is one of the best representations of them that I have ever seen. Also Sean Connery did a great job as the voice of Draco in Dragonheart (horrible movie, just horrible) but he was good.

I absolutely love Western dragons, but I don't really like Chinese dragons as much. Snakes with wings I just don't find as cool as the awe-inspiring beasts of Western fantasy.

Bits and pieces of the Drakengard games, and all of Panzer Dragoon (though that's just a rail shooter, while the Drakengard sections are closer to a free-ranging flight sim).

OT: I prefer dragons when they're incredibly rare and slightly intelligent, yet still animals, not exactly people... so, like the ones in A Song of Ice and Fire.

I like them, but not as a mindless monster. Intelligent Dragons are defiantly the best. They should speak and have a role outside of "oh shit, its a dragon." Give 'em a name, a personality, a decent voice actor, some influence over the events of the story other then being the biggest mother fucker there.

I've always been a huge fan of dragons.

Warcraft handles it's dragons very well. As dragons get older, they get more intelligent and powerful.

As whelps and drakes, they are nothing more than beasts. But when they mature, they are something different entirely.

Dragons are my Batman. I loves me some Dragons, Wyverns, Wyrms, etc. I've never understood though, why classic Dragons never figure into Sci-Fi. I also dislike how many Dragons are unable to talk. I'd love to play a game, or watch something, which takes place in the future and yet uses Dragons in the plot in some way or another.

Because Sci-Fi is different than Fantasy. I am sure there are crosses in the genre's, but they are done different than either genre, I am sure.

That said, my ex-fiancee was obsessed with Dragons, and it got to the point where I just about verbally *****-slapped her about how dragons aren't real and that she needed to get a life. Sure, I like Sci-Fi, but I also focus on things that help me in real life. (Which, when you look at most sci-fi, it tends more towards focusing on the human aspect of humanity, and how we all behave as a society. Fantasy can do that, but the stuff I read tended to be more about hurling magic and fireballs, and lacked even decent tactical and strategic understanding of the battles. Which REALLY pissed me off. Yeah, I don't read much fantasy, and really don't care for dragons. If you are going to create things, I can come up with way cooler technology that would whip the shit out of a dragon in even an unfair fight.)

But that is really my stance on anything. If you are going to make it up, at least make it good.

Okay, Rant over, I can see why Dragons figure big into mythology for the medieval era, after all, Archers and knights couldn't take them in a fair fight. They were supposedly dangerous foes. But, I bet that they are the Death Star of the era. A really cool weapon that everyone knew never existed. But really, I would put an F-22 against a dragon any day of the week. Or, you know, an F-15.

I love dragons if they're handled well. They shouldn't be just a large dangerous animal, even if it's a smart animal. They should be intelligent, inscrutable, and incredibly dangerous. The best dragons I've seen were in Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books. I loved Ged's interaction with the dragon Yevaud.

I'll just echo what everyone else has said here and just say I love dragons WHEN THEY'RE DONE PROPERLY FFS.

1. They need to be at least semi-intelligent.

2. They need to look good. Seriously. I don't wanna talk to some pathetic looking swamp dragon or something.

Neverwinter Nights did all this with a most admirable quality.

As to Skyrim, yes, it's great that they're putting dragons into the game BUT it looks like they're making them into just mindless beasts. NOOOOOOO!!! Now what would be cool is at the end of the game, they could somehow make it to where you could choose to help out the dragons and make a deal with them that is, if Bethesda makes the proper decision of making them, or at least the greater ruling ones, intelligent.

I'm cool with them all. The wyverns with no front legs, just wings, the wyrms with no wings, the classic Western dragon which is mostly bipedal (a little like a Tyrannosaur in the hindquarters), the Eastern dragon with no wings but flying capabilities nonetheless, the D&D style dragon, Puff the Magic Dragon, and everywhere in between. Dragons are pretty nifty in my book.

(I drew this AWESOME dracolich (think a skeleton that belonged to such a powerful mage that it continued existing after death, through sheer force of will, now consider that this skeleton also belonged to a dragon) one time... Have to put it up on the internets at some point...)
