How do you grind?

What a shame that we, as gamers, must endure such boring filler. I feel no sense of accomplishment, just duped for wasting my time grinding levels in a 'game'. What happened to fun?

That comes afterwards, when you see the results of your hard work. For instance, a while ago I got to grinding for hours in Disgaea in order to perfect the strongest sword in the game. Previous to owning that sword, I could deal 7mil, maybe 10-11mil damage in a single hit, max. After obtaining said perfect sword, however, I was able to dish wout up to 21mil damage in a single hit. It's those little things that make it all worth it.

I love grinding. Don't know why but one of my biggest thrills in games comes from seeing that sparkly above-head sign that usually comes with a amusing jingle.

Sometimes I wish I could level up in real life.

I'm waiting for that glorious day when I can increase my stats and be more snazzy than I am. I'll hum my own jingle and dance a little jig.

For the most part, I enjoy grinding.
For a second I thought this thread was gonna be about raunchy club dancing. I'm almost disappointed.

Interesting... I'm ever-so-slightly intruiged despite my not liking racing games too much.

The cool thing about it is that you don't actually HAVE to participate in races, you can just drive around the city doing odd jobs for people.
There is one grind-ish optional aspect, where you patrol massive areas of the city, and basically a bunch of rings pop up and you have to drive over them. Each one gives you 1 exp point, so it's next to useless.

I usually find a smaller goal I can pursue while also going for the big one. Like finding a repeat "kill x number of guys" quest while I'm trying to collect drops from enemies in the same area.
Music helps too, though.

There are many games, usually RPGs, that at some point will ask you to start grinding. Whether that mean trying to level up your character or find a specific item drop, many of us have had to deal with grinding from time to time. So I ask you, Escapees, how do you deal with the grind?

I've had 'Disgaea Training', meaning that I can grind for days at a time without fatigue, but the main thing that gets me through it is being able to play any and all of my music in the background. No matter how monotonous or boring the grind my be, if I can distract my self with my music, I can keep goin as long as I need to

I find that if a game requests you to grind it deserves to be forced to be thrown into the sea with 1,000,000 sharks circling it, if it manages to kill them all it'll level up and I'll chuck it into a similar looking ocean with 2,000,000 crocodiles, and as a mocking insult, a small blunt knife.

Seriously my reaction to it, if too extreme is simply "F**k off". It doesn't take skill, it takes persistence and that persistence only leads to further frustration. Then again there are some few games where grinding isn't actually that bad because killing 1,000,000 rats is interesting and different enough, but if its not a ***** I don't call it grinding, I call it 'playing the game'.

Well first off, there's no need to quote my OP; this is my thread, why wouldn't I be reading the responses?

And grinding, from my experience, is more about working hard to achieve more power within the game. It's quite satisfying to work for a while, and then see the results that that work has brought you.

Even so, I can understand your hatred of it. I think that's why some of the best games don't require you to grind too much until the meta game, where the story is already done and now the only reason to continue is for the challenge.

I usually occupy myself with something else and occasionally look at the game. My only real "grinding" is in pokemon.

I suppose if that's your thing. I'd rather just be a good shot in Mass Effect, a smoother talker in Fallout, or good with a weapon in Gothic, and have to grind the same tasks over and over for hours just to advance. Ultima 7, Fallout (any), Planescape, all grind-less masterpieces of joyous gaming.

Then I play Vesperia and want to punch my TV.

Indeed, to each their own.

I like working to level up in hopes of gaining a new skill, which, the higher the level, often the more awesome the skill looks. I also enjoy working to grind lots of money in order to buy that one, super expensive, yet incredibly powerful, uber weapon, which will allow me to mop the floor with my enemies. It can be quite fun to work to gain ultimate power, and then have the ability to use it freely.

Honestly, on my first play through, I generally avoid the grind. I give myself enough challenge to say I accomplished something, even if I am not a high enough level or strength for it.

For example, in FFXII, I beat Gilgamesh, a level 70 mob at level 56. I got my Zodiac Spear at level 44, and I beat some of the extra bosses at lower levels than I should, currently working on Yiazmat at level 72, have him to about 12 bars left too.

Usually on my second playthrough I grind the HELL out of games. A good example of this is the .hack//G.U games, where I generally have Haseo at level cap with weapon skills maxed at about... 1/3rd to 1/2 half of the game completed, for each volume. Makes the rest of the game easy though XD.

Currently on my first playthrough of Mass Effect 1 and 2, so not much grinding here, but I have been mining a lot, if that's considered a grind.

I play borderlands which i find really fun but i don't consider it grinding. I use the game for bad days when i just need to commit a massacre. hmmm... i can't think of anything else i play that i "consider" grinding.

It depends on the game really. In most games I usually just find the enemy that gives good exp/the item I need and hit attack until dead while doing something else. Eventually I'll get it. If i'm really determined I'll set up a freaking route for it all to kill most effectively.

I know with disgaea, I've been able to memorize simply the movements and buttons I need to press in order so I wouldn't even have to pay attention to the game and I'd still grind levels very quickly. You can get really lost in a game if you try hard enough.

Pokemon was probably the first and last game I ever ground.

I just don't like grinding from both my lack of patience and the fact that I just can't agree with what it is. Movies, books, and pretty much most other media flesh out a plot through the use of several other subplots and struggles, but only video gaming turns such things into dull, repetitive tasks. I understand some degree of repetition is necessary, but some games are grind-fucking-tastic, and it's unnecessary.

I may pick it back up in a year but right now i have other games id rather play that don't have item worlds.

Usually I grind late at night or when I'm tired. Usually I start at 1 or 2 and play for what feels like an hour, but for some reason the sky grows awfully light in that hour. On my DS I grind whenever I go somewhere with it, so I don't have to worry about the story progressing while I'm in a waiting room and only half paying attention or something.

The item worlds really weren't too bad in D1. You didn't have to kill any of the monsters to get the same effects of leveling the item, so you could just run through the levels, killing a bear minimun of enemies, and killing each of the item general/king/gods. The Item Worlds are really only a pain in D2, where you have to gain 200 levels within 100 in order to get perfect stats, which requires many resets.
