How do you grind?

Not a huge fan of grinding games, thus I usually limit my rpgs. I have noticed, though that it seems like grinding seems to be much more widespread in mmorpgs than regular rpgs.

You can 'digaea grind' i did for a while but after i beat baal or watever the guys name was and finally got the strongest sword i reached my limit when it came to grinding.

I play borderlands which i find really fun but i don't consider it grinding. I use the game for bad days when i just need to commit a massacre. hmmm... i can't think of anything else i play that i "consider" grinding.
Ahh, but after Baal there's Prinny Baal to take down, and if you've beatin' that, then the next challenge is to pass all the Stronger Enemies Bills and fight Prinny Baal one-on-one to see who's really top notch!
Yea well i reached my limit with that game and im playing final fantasy tactics which doesn't make me go through the item levels. Those were ok for a while but when i put over 400 hours on disgaea i put it down.

I may pick it back up in a year but right now i have other games id rather play that don't have item worlds.
The item worlds really weren't too bad in D1. You didn't have to kill any of the monsters to get the same effects of leveling the item, so you could just run through the levels, killing a bear minimun of enemies, and killing each of the item general/king/gods. The Item Worlds are really only a pain in D2, where you have to gain 200 levels within 100 in order to get perfect stats, which requires many resets.
Maybe not to you but after a while i get tired of it now. Used to i could get 2 legendaries 3 common maxed out without a problem but after a while it just became a hunt for legendaries then seeking the item god who held the legendary weapon i was seeking.

I can understand that; I had gone into a trance-like state at the time, sleeping every other day so I could grind the hell out of that game. Still, it was made easier by the fact that, say you were in a Yoshitsuna, you could steal that weapon again from the Item God, giving you two to work with. It was rather annoying finding all the R40, legendary weapons though, I'll give you that.

I been playing DQ9 a lot recently. What I like to do is put on a long TV series of a few hours and watch while grind. Although DQ is fun enough to just grind. I barely touched the plot and am at 40 hours.

There are many games, usually RPGs, that at some point will ask you to start grinding. Whether that mean trying to level up your character or find a specific item drop, many of us have had to deal with grinding from time to time. So I ask you, Escapees, how do you deal with the grind?

I've had 'Disgaea Training', meaning that I can grind for days at a time without fatigue, but the main thing that gets me through it is being able to play any and all of my music in the background. No matter how monotonous or boring the grind my be, if I can distract my self with my music, I can keep goin as long as I need to
how do i grind? pervert.
Oh, don't be that way! Common, you can tell me, neh?

Runescape, with all its skills is more like Grindscape, but I still manage to pass the time when I have the attention span to do 1k of something by either finding a good bank or cluster of trees where others are grinding the same skill, or ironically, finding entertainment elsewhere (such as Youtube, tv, another game... wait a minute....). I rarely have the attention span to do even that, though. I only like to play a game until it's not fun anymore, even if I end up a welfare-class-armor-owning penniless adventure/hobo. At least I had fun. =P

short answer:
conversation where it can be found, and other distractions

of course i shall talk about WoW here, my absolute fav MMORPG...

go to one area; pick up all the quests i can; use the coords from LightHeaded (in conjunction with Koordinator and TomTom) do all the instance quests for there, move on to another area, delete old grey quests, repeat. pretty straight-forward. Although, being a horde player, i do have an alliance (friend won the coin toss, meh.) i have a lvl 37 Draenei priest who has never gone past the 2 starting islands. he sits in Exodar n does random dungeons all day, roffle.

Eh I enjoy grinding, the satisfaction of getting that weapon/armor/time/reaching that level for the most part makes up for the grind. Sure there are varying degrees of how much of a grind it is but for the most part I enjoy it, hell if you're going to be doing something for hours and hours best to make the most of it eh?

I haven't grind-ed (ground?) in aaaages, but when I did I put a very long playlist on and got to work until I fell into a mouse-clicking dream-state and lost the ability to blink.

Well first off, there's no need to quote my OP; this is my thread, why wouldn't I be reading the responses?

And grinding, from my experience, is more about working hard to achieve more power within the game. It's quite satisfying to work for a while, and then see the results that that work has brought you.

Even so, I can understand your hatred of it. I think that's why some of the best games don't require you to grind too much until the meta game, where the story is already done and now the only reason to continue is for the challenge.
I quote people whenever I respond to a post and I don't consider it to be one my many, many bad qualities. I do apologize if it irritates you though.

In my experience the results don't appear until you've gained a level, which often times can take a week or so of work, and for me games are generally an alternative to work. When it gets to the point where I can no longer see my goal over the millions of obstacles covering it I simply don't care to try anymore, and to be completely honest, since its generally MMO's I'm referring to and I don't invest much time compared to everyone else, what results am I going to see? Within a week I may have leveled and gained a skill which is excellent, makes me feel good for a few moments, but then I see everyone else tower above me and... Meh.

I guess I'm fine with Grinding in Singleplayer games as its often a whole lot less frustrating, I'm also fine with Grinding in other games so long as I can actually see some progress instead of just having a staring competition with my monitor as soon as I get home from a long day, but really I'm quite intolerant of the whole ordeal.

(Of course the solution is simple, don't play MMO's, so don't take it as me unleashing my frustration on you, just expressing my hate for the system. =])

i can see you refusing to cut the lawn outside for weeks, just so that you drag your TV and consoles out and lie down in it in order to grind :p thats assuming that is a picture of you in your Avatar, which is helping me "see you" doing this.

urgh, this is going to sound weird, but i often talk to myself. mimic the characters (usually with overly high pitched or deep voices) but make them comment on the retardedness of the situation, make them argue with each other and even just pick on one person. then i realise what i'm doing and start making them pick on me for talking with myself, then i start argueing with them, telling them how much they suck and say things like "HEY, if you're so bothered about me talking to myself, maybe you should focus more on the game, you should stop hitting yourself Tidus!!" and then eventually i nearly kill my whole party and have to stop again.

of course, this only applies for JRPG's, where the characters are pre-set and there are always lots of them to have fun with. WRPG's i always got told you'd never have to grind for. and thats true i guess, but only because, in Oblivion, i've never seen "go kill and collect 3 minotaur horns" as a grind quest, because its laid out so damn easy. They will probably appear on map and i can fast travel too them. And its not like you're ever having to grind to improve your level for a quest, because you can just go off and do some other quest. but Hey, maybe thats just because Oblivion is such a great game, and its not like i was ever told "i'm sorry, you can't complete this quest because your skills with explosives isn't high enough" like in some other game which i consider to be not as good. at least Oblivion let me try to lockpick the "very hard" locks (which i could usually successfully unlock) rather than having an even easier lockpicking mini-game but refusing to let me even try most the time. but thats find, because there is usually a computer you can hack somewhere if you are a high enough... oh wait.

yeah, sorry, that was a bit silly of me, i went totally offtopic to have a rant about WRPG's that aren't as good as others.

I grinded alot in shadow hearts.. Found all the Fusion demons, even the secret one where you had to do all sorts of different stuff in proper order to get..

I leveled so much that many of my playable charachters had attacks that could dish out a maximum damage of 999..

Loved that game to death, but that was ages ago though..

Sometimes I come onto the Escapist. Particularly if the game has selection memory. I hate games that don't have that.

But I've taken to listening to books on audio. I just pop on the old mp3 player and listen to World War Z or something like that. It gets me through the grind without driving me bonkers. I also noticed it helps me not have those "rpg grind" dreams after a day of grinding. My fellow grinders might now what I'm talking about.

I turn it off and go play a better game. Or read a book. Or go outside.

Any game that has unavoidable grinding is shit on a stick. I have better things to do.
