How do you hold the controller?

I play the same way as the OP, but I only use my index fingers on the back four buttons. If I need to press L1 and L2 at the same time I will use mu ring finger on L2. I find I can pull the trigger faster if I use my index finger on the trigger, and that can be the difference between winning and losing in some games.

Everyone makes fun of me because when playing fighting games I'll usually set the thing in my lap and just forget about the triggers. The newer controllers (say, post-Dreamcast) make my hands hurt if I use them too long on account of the triggers, the GameCube controller being the only exception.
I don't know why they would laugh at you, that's how fighting games are meant to be played. Assuming it's an arcade fighter that is.
They're usually 6 button arcade fighters, meaning that if I'm using a controller with four face buttons then I'm two buttons short. It's very effective for Soul Calibur, though, which is the only fighting game I'm actually decent at. I've been trying to get actual arcade sticks for my systems, but they're such a bother to haul out every time you want to play.

I have a PC and I don't have a controller.
So there is no point for me to post anything.

I keep one thumb on each joystick, and my index fingers on the triggers for a PS3 controller. Actually, I've had the same controller for 3 different consoles now so I guess I'm really set in my ways.

I use my thumbs for the thumb-sticks, dpad and face buttons, my index fingers for the bumpers and triggers and my other 6 fingers just grip the controller underneath.

I think that because I have quite large hands, I can control everything with just my thumbs and index fingers.
