I almost always keep up iTunes, Chrome, and MSN. Everything else I close as soon as I am done with it to keep things going smoothly.

I have so much crap running when I am using my computer, and I hardly turn it off.

In fact I can see I have at least 6 programs running now (on the tray, beyond that there is probably a lot more)

I think thats how cults get started..........
The machine god hears your prayer and his tech priests are pleased now if you would kindly forward a donation to the following address they will continue to allow your computer to run....

I'm glad I'm not the only one whos immediate reaction to the thread title was to troll it with jokes; it makes me feel like less of a bastard.

Normally as I dont use my laptop for gaming I have only a few programs running-those being Itunes, Firefox and Msn Messenger with occasionaly uTorrent or bbc iplayer/4ondemand running in the background depending on if theres any programs I want to see.

The first thing I'd do with that laptop of yours would be to format the hell out of it and install XP, cut down using nLite, or Lunix if you're feeling ballsy. The default image that comes with laptops is loaded with useless shit that seems to do nothing but cause headaches for me, personally.

Before I defected to consoledom, my PC ran beautifully. I knew the ins and outs of it better than most diagnostic software. At one point, I was able to pick out a dying fan by change in pitch. I'd tinker and play with that glorious machine, making every effort to squeeze a little more power out of it and I would learn from it when it died from my efforts. It taught me a lot, it did.

Of course, when I refer to my computer, I'm talking about the same computer I've had for the past 10 years. Sure, the bits have been swapped out periodically and there's only one component left that I used with my original computer - the power cable, but as either the case or the internals transferred from one incarnation to the next, the soul of the machine carried on.

i often try to stay to the minimum. It works on my computer. When i'm on Guild Wars, having even a internet page open (even something as basic as google) will cause incredible lag and sprite dis function.

My computer doesn't need motivation, I always have death metal playing.

I'm obsessed with getting the best performance. I run up to 12+ programs at a time but have no idle background programs or unneeded processes running. I uninstalled iTunes because in it's infinitely poor design it runs 3 different processes at all times, even when it's not running.

Haha great comments.

Sadly my computer refuses to even go online now. I'm on my desktop =/ This thing is pretty old too and it freakin downloads faster than my laptop. I'm so mad about it...It has a limited connectivity to my router for no reason since earlier it was at least connected -_- Now it won't even do that. I turned off all my firewalls and have no background tasks running but apparently, thats not good enough. *sigh* sometimes I really hate technology. I've looked everywhere for a solution and i'm left with nothing.
Sounds like your wireless card might have kicked the bucket. Run windows diagnostics.

My sister gave me an ipod shuffle the other day. She got it free, I needed an mp3 player. If my search for an itunes substitute hadn't been successful, I would have smashed the device with a hammer, rather than install that garbage.

Hooray for poddox!

I would keep the running processes at startup to a minimun regardless of the system. Everyone should grab stardocks ObjectDock rather than having programs running at startup run them with ease when you actually need them.

I have a couple of programs running in the back ground of my computer just my anti-virus and firewall, but my comp is also 8 years old, so that might explain the 10 minute wait before I can use it after turning it on.

I use msconfig to remove any miscellaneous applications from opening up at startup. Oh how I hate the Vista startup process. Just make sure you don't disable any important processes for your operating system.

Contrary to what I tell people at work, I don't run any sort of AV/AS software. If I notice my computer is starting to slow down for some reason, I'll just do a format/reload. I've done some scans of my machine, I do filesharing and a whole bunch of other illegal stuff, but the scanners always come up clean.

I really wish Ubuntu had drivers for my network cards and my tablet interface. I'd install that in a heartbeat. FUCK YOU BROADCOM!

try not to think about it, some say the sheer lack of speed can cause brainal melting, even when thought about.
I still use a PII 333mHz every day.

Just saying.

I keep my PC running at bare minimums. I don't like to have lots of windows open at the best of times so I tend to close tabs and windows and programs. I hate having to deal with a reboot so I keep programs at a bare minimum on that as well. I actually shut down a lot of windows services by default so that I don't have to deal with them. I think the base boot up memory footprint is 304MB of 3GB.

I do have a copy of VMware running in the background at all times as I need a remote access OpenBSD server, so that jacks up the CPU and Memory consumption a little bit, but it's not enough to notice in games. Or otherwise.

Edit:

Smart Defrag, Firewall, Avira Antivir Personal and SUPERAntiSpyware. Keeps everything running fine though I do have a Quad Core so it wouldn't cause really any slow downs.
