How do you use minecarts in Minecraft?

I just spent a few hours in Minecraft. I've only played on my first world, but after loosing my last mine I decided to start a new one somewhere much easier to find. Anyway, I had pretty good luck mining, found some caves and was able to start acquiring quite a bit of iron ore. So, after making the essentials, I crafted 64 rails and a few carts. I figured I could put the carts in a big cave at the bottom, then just use a cart+box and a cart+furnace to push a box full of junk back up to where my furnaces are. I tried doing this in my last mine as well. However in both cases it was pretty useless since by the time I might need to send supplies back up, I myself need to go up just to get new pick axes and whatnot... that, or I just end up finding a new cave and get killed lol.

So anyway, I'm thinking at this point the only use for the carts is a quick way back down to my most recent cave. But I'd like to know how other people put them to use. Are they only good at being a toy (rollercoaster!)

It's like lego... but you need to first mine the lego. Then you can also craft stuff. From doors to switches to rails, carts, swords, picks, axes, shovels, boats etc... There are enemies. They spawn in the dark places... so, either everywhere at night, or else when ever you go spelunking. Sometimes you find large caves and there's just too many dark places and well, the monsters kill you.

It's good tho, I decided to spend tonight playing it instead of Fallout New Vegas or F1 2010 (my most recent games). Can't wait to get back into it... I want to build a huge tower. Maybe that's where I'll put a cart to good use.

Did you make the motorized carts, those may help a bit
Yeah, I was going to use it to push the full box-cart back up to the top while I can continue mining.

I'm thinking at this time I just haven't been taking enough pick axes with me lol, next time I'll bring a lot more then I can really fill up the supply box and send it up, while I continue to mine.

I've used carts twice as set pieces in my dungeons. Also as a rollercoaster, indoors, in an airship I built. Oh, and as a stand-in for the Bathysphere in Rapture (which also has a metro that goes from the entrance to all of the major locations).

For convenience? Not so much. I can walk.

You can craft weapons like swords, bows and arrows and even TNT. The sword is the easiest to make but if you don't have any you can just punch them. Just run away from the green monsters.

Edit: This will also help: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting

OT: Haven't built any yet but i'm planning on using it in a large mineshaft I have.
