id say they are like most countries. for every good thing america has or does there is an equally bad thing to counter it.

melting pot of culture-racism
massive military spending-homeless people robbing banks so they can go to prison to get medical care.

5 ish

year after year there just seems to be more news about america slipping away. education and health care sytems that just appear to be rubbish.

I rank America in the same category as China. So evil and powerful, but nobody can stop them.

If the cold war turned hot, I would of wanted America to win, because it was kinda cool. But now Russia is better. But Mr. Obama seems to be bringing America back to it's former greatness. But the stigma of the evil and power will last for generations.

And your Avatar speaks for your being massively dickish and intentionally insulting. I was talking about our reputation from the perspective of other countries. Damn, way to go into the thread guns blazing.
I'm being truthful. Countries like Guyana or Uruguay could give two shits about American exceptionalism. There are countless countries in the world where the U.S. has and continues to hold little cultural weight. Assuming that the U.S. is a "beacon of hope for almost the entire world" is arrogant and totally ignorant of the massive diversity of world cultures. There are large parts of the world that actively dislike us.
Right, because its wrong to assume that because of there being huge waves of immigrants from Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Russia (because they really don't count as being in Europe), Mexico, Japan, China, and many South American countries, that we were a beacon of hope for literally most of the known world.

I'm not debating America's greatness, because the country was undeniably the greatest on this planet in many regards, I merely asked about your opinion on the America of today. You must be able to see above the clouds from up there.
Why, exactly, was the U.S undeniably the greatest nation on the planet? When? By what criteria exactly?
Largest military, largest economy, huge entertainment business, great culture, rebuilding Germany and Japan (after we fundamentally destroyed them), and we brought social security to the masses. This was in the mid 1900s and we have since declined in many respects like culture and entertainment. So we had our heyday, but it's gone now. I'd really like to close this argument because this all happened in the past, and this thread was created to discuss the now.

America has had the reputation for being a beacon of hope for almost the entire world for more than 100 years. We also have the reputation of being rednecks, idiots, war-mongering fools, and being stubborn.

So then, on a scale of 1-10, how does good ol' 'Mericuh do for ya?
-----------------
After a bit of thought, and influence from your comments. I think I'll score us at the respectable score of 6.5.

Pros:

Great technology, a melting pot of cultures, large cities, large territories, huge economy, and a hefty military to kick any oppposition square in the keister.

Cons:

Massive debt, a surplus of idiots in the Government, a currently clogged up system of Part Politics, the WBC, the KKK, McCarthyism, and money hungry corporations.

Hold on, you do know that your Hefty Military and warmongering is why a lot of people hate you guys?

I myself have not been the biggest supporter of America these past few years, mainly because of things like Fox News, and your previous President, making your country look like a bunch of retarded people.
I also dislike the thought of "defending your country" by fighting faceless enemies half a planet away to be a pretty wrong statement... at least considering how much more hate for america it builds in the middle east :p

Positive things to comeo ut of america I would state the Entertainment industry; games, tv series, movies... most of it comes from the US, for better or for worse :)

All in all your post builds up my view of Americans as thinking themselves better than the rest of the world, considering how you present it ;)
Essentially in the OP I was going for the stigma we have for ourselves and the views some countries have against us. I guess I didn't balance it enough.

The American Way of life is kind of self destructive. Its because of that thinking that brought us into this economic depression (Though its a lot better then a few years ago)

Weed is still illegal and they are wasting millions for nothing. Gays still are being discriminated every day and arent even allowed to marry.

I am just so glad I dont live there.

Atheist!!! Kill him!!

Just kidding, I think the whole cult of religion we have going over here that scrutinizes everything that is different until it dies is completely ridiculous.

People still freak out when I tell them that I don't belong to any faith. The anti-muslim thing is absolutely disgusting as well.

Well stated, ampersand indeed. I vote 8. It has very friendly people and highly developed technology. Though it does depend where you are of course.

Pre War on Terror? - 8.8
Today - 5

Though that opinion is hardly unique; it's amazing how you managed to lose most of your international support in but a few years.

I am not fond of it. The only times I go is if my friends are going to do shopping in Buffalo when the dollar is good. but the last time I was there was 2009 and I went to DC.
I would give it a five.

That's not an American reputation that I'm familiar with.

OT: Personally, I'd give America about a 6

Pros: American is a well developed nation with advanced technology, good human rights enforcement, strong trade links, and a variety of cultures. It is arguably the most powerful nation in the world.

Cons: DISCLAIMER: I am not trying to stereotype here, I am aware that this does not apply to everybody. The fact that America is arguably the most powerful nation in the world can result in over-patriotic arrogance in some members of the population. America has more riots than many other countries. As a nation, America has a lower tolerance of homosexuality than many other nations. It also has the Westboro Baptist Church. America has by far the highest incarceration rate of any nation.

Dislike the place really.

and when did america have the biggest army? ww2 russia had the largest army, then i believe china during the koreanwar/vietnam period-today. before ww2 it was the british empire and the commonwealth.

i don't think america has ever had the largest military, largest stockpile of nuclear weapons definitely, largest military definitely not.

Beacon to the rest of the world definitely not.

$46,000 dollars of debt per US citizen, theres not really anyway america can turn round its fortunes without massive taxes on the rich and cuts across the board.

i really do pitty america, after ww2 it had the chance to be the greatest nation on the planet and a beacon to the world for centuries to come, but the countries' ego definitely effected it for the worse.

and now everyone hates you, including your allies.

oh shiz forgot to score you guys, 5/10 (not as bad as uganda, but not as good as kenya, and trailing behind europe by a longshot).

McCarthyism,
I agree with on everything on the cons but this made me facepalm.
Well McCarthyism itself has passed but the effects of it on the mindset of the general populace still exists and is apparent... at least in the older generations.

OT: I'd give it a 7.5. Good, but needs work.

As a Canadian I can't help but look over at you guys n facepalm more times than I feel should ever be neccisary every country does dumb things here and there but you guys think the rest of the world is starving in the streets half the time. You guys have been in a new war every ten years for god knows how long and your proud of that millitary despite it strangling you all in debt. The final thing that absolutly annoys me to all hell its really stupid but drives me up the freaking wall in every movie tv show comic etc etc it's always america own the world if aliens invade to take over the world where do they go why the white house of course same thing with terorists etc etc etc its always americans own the world, it annoys the hell outta me.

But on a better note you guys have lots of great things going for ya I just think the goverments prioritys are outta wack, always debating over stupid things rather than cracking down on the real issues for example gay marrage is a huge issue there rather than say poverty or somthing else thats actually important.

But ya great country just messed up prioritys and thinks way to highly of itself without even relizing it.

(sorry if it seems like I'm hating just take what I said in a monotone sorta style niether praise nor hate just observation)

6.8/10

Overly patriotic, arrogance, religious, has poor, low-class people & overly aggressive foreign affairs policy.
---

That list doesn't seem to warrant a 0. 7 or 6, 5 at least/most (dunno which one fits better).

American politics are pretty sickening to me. I detested President Bush for his reckless spending and trampling over our constitutional principles, but President Obama is even worse in terms of spending, and where Bush actually went to Congress to get the things he wanted passed, Obama's style is far more dictatorial, focusing instead on placing regulations on us through a bureaucratic labyrinth with no input at all from our congressional representatives. We've forgotten a lesson that the early Americans knew and tried to teach us - Anyone who wants political power can't be trusted with it - and we're paying for that mistake.

We've been on a steady decline, both politically and culturally, ever since the ideas of Europe's Fabian socialists started to take root here a century ago. Since then, we've seen a worsening of race relations, ever-increasing debt, constant wars, and the erosion of the freedoms that set us apart in the first place. As a result, the ideals of America, as laid out by its founders, have never truly been tested in the modern world, which I believe is a terrible loss for all people across the globe, regardless of what the outcome would be.

Still, I love the parts of our culture that are still among the most reasonable and civil in the world. I love our devotion to the arts and sciences. I love our fundamental distrust of any powerful authority, our commitment to religious freedom even among fundamentalist circles, and our unprecedented capacity for charity. As much as I wish our governmental policies were different, as long as the spirit of the American people remains the same, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

No numerical rating because that's retarded.
