And there is a place to go for custom avatars as well, so that may help some.
Yes there is such a place. Also on a sad note Fanboy will no longer make avatars, EVER.
I knew it!
And that is a very sad thing indeed. His works were always masterpieces.
Oh well. At least we've got you!
Yeah I PMed him and he said he simply didn't come on here enough to justify taking on projects, : (

I drew my own (Go MSPaint!), so unless someone else, who enjoyed sandbox games as much as I do, wanted to flatter the crap outta me, I think it'll stay pretty original.

As for why we rarely have dupes of av's? I dunno, probably because everyone here wants their own identity and don't want to copy anyone else?

I can only speak for me, but I change mine often enough that even if someone else uses it, chances are it won't be at the same time as me ... which reminds me *changes avatar*.

I will go long periods of time before changing an avatar.
I've only ever had 3 avatars in the past 15 years of being on the internets.

I found this many years ago and I've yet to see anyone else with it, it's even more original now because the awesome people at the Avater Store made it blink ...BLINK!!

Although i'm not at all well known, i hope people will recognize my posts via the Blinking Cloud... It blinks at you

I've actually pretty much always made my own avatars simply on the grounds that as an artist of sorts it's a bit shameful not to in my case. It's led to people checking out my work in general, tho, which is never a bad thing, and helps me be fairly identifiable, so for putting an hour or two into making something acceptable I tend to get a decent return out of things. o3o

As for the Escapist in general, many people with many tastes, which I think has been stated before somehow or other.

We are a rather wide-spread group of individuals with so many different interests and likes that it's pretty much unlikely that repeats would be the norm.

Plus, when you have people who make their own, that just simplifies things even further.
Oh, right. Well, there you have it.

Well I just got mine made by Sleek a few moments ago so I guess it's partly because of The Escapist's awesome avatar designers.

I think there is kind of a non-spoken rule around here about not having the same avatar as other users. Its just kind of somehting you avoid, I don't know why but it makes for a lot of uniqueness!

Have you seen his motto?

"Stop sending me avatar requests!"

Because we all have different reasons for using the avatars that we do and most people will change their avatars if the realize they have the same one as another user.

Why?

The need to stand out.

I personally picked mine because I like Pokᴱmon.

Because if I see anyone else with a Persona 3/Haruhui Suzumiya crossover avatar I will personally track them down and kill them.

On a serious note, mostly because there's a lot of pictures on the internet worth having as avy's, so there's a lot of choice for people.

Well, no, I live in a log cabin. We got a pond outside for hockey, and we harvest maple syrup from the trees. But my dad isn't a mountie or a lumberjack. I'm a failure at being stereotypically Canadian.

I'm probably going to continue choosing scenes from Yahtzee's videos... I consider it safe because someone would have to 'prt sc' the exact second that I do, in order to double me.

I picked mine up somewhere, and just liked it. As far as I know, I'm the only Escapist with a Kaname Chidori avatar (and this is the second one of her that I've used...)
