Find a guide on tomshardware, order the parts, and Macgyver it together.

Research.
Buy.
Assemble.

That's really all there is to it.

For you, I give a useful link: http://www.nordichardware.com/Guides/?page=1&skrivelse=432

Now then, to answer your question about chipsets and DIMMs.

1)DIMMs, as far as I'm concerned, are the RAM sticks.

2)A chipset is a lump of silicon built into every motherboard, where it controls the motherboard functions including, but not limited to, the transfer of information between PC components and the number of functions availible.

To help you on your way, I've compiled a list of components you'd like:

Now I didn't know whether or not you have any peripherals, so I added some cheapies in - but that should do you for the games you want to play.
omg thank you!
thats really helpful :)
and damn, it all comes up to a ncie price!
what store is that at?

Wow, some people went to a lot of effort to give help. Not me.

But one bit of advice would be to be careful with the clips for the CPU heatsink because you can crack a mobo in two doing them (I haven't but my friend did) and it's probably the most stressful part of the build.

Also remember to keep earthed and don't use screwdrivers etc that collect static, or discharge them on radiators and stuff regularly.

Other than that its fairly simple and there will be instruction manuals with each component.

If you don't know what you're doing, I'd advise you ask someone who does to do it. Ask if you can lurk and help/ask questions, but doing a major overhaul as your first job is a bit of a daft idea.

i'm going to say this, since you live in Canada and near the stores, go to Canada Computers http://www.canadacomputers.com great prices AND a great selection of stuff

i used to drive an hour to a store just to buy parts and it was still cheaper than getting them locally with gas factored into the cost

other than that find a video on youtube that shows you how to assemble them, they aren't hard, just make sure you aren't statically charged

This thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.105715?page=1] may help.

+1 for Tiger Direct as a good supplier, Newegg [http://www.newegg.ca/] also has a Canadian branch.

It's like very complicated lego
Yeah, a lego that is full of MOSFET's that so static sensitive you can destroy them by looking at them funny if the components and yourself are not properly grounded.

A lot of glue, stickle bricks, lightbulbs and gaffa tape.

Srsly though, I'm not questioning the knowledge and practicality of this community (hey, it's a games forum after all), but I'd want to consult with some professionals about parts and components. (But what do I know, there are probably tons of computer professionals here)

Myself don't knwo squat about computers. So no help from me, sorry. =)

When I build a top notch PC, this is what I'm gonna do:

This is a great idea for anyone who runs a server too! Great heat management with no fans or pipes.

This is how i learnt how to build PC's

1. Walk into friendly PC store that will build PC's for you.
2. Make friends
3. Buy your parts from them (get a good deal)
4. Ask them to Build it for you.
5. Ask if you can observe the techy building it, to understand how it all works.
6. Observe and ask questions.

On that specific occasion the guy had a Batch of PC's to build, so i ended up helping him install parts on some of the PC's. as i guess "payment" for observing him work.
