So for quite a while now my Xbox has had strict nat and no matter what I do it stays the same. My PS3 on the other hand has open nat. How does that make sense? Can somone please explain. Also help for fixing SN would not go amiss.

There is something on the help menu. You have to do something like check your internet connection. It will tell you that you are open and then it will work. I'm not near my xbox at the moment so I can't tell you exactly. Try the help tips and solutions menu on the dashboard. Sorry, can't be much help.

Port forwarding can overcome most problems. I don't know if it will fix the NAT issue though. Restarting the router or modem can sometimes open the NAT again. Microsoft have a how-to guide for port forwarding on the xbox support site.

I would also like to know the answer to this, I think it has something to do with firewalls.

I did all the things MS said and it stll ain't working.
The only other options i can suggest is to set up a DMZ for the xbox IP address or use a wired connection. A DMZ should solve any issues you have with connectivity but it is a massive security risk. Essentially you're making your connection open and available with zero security and inviting hackers and whatnot to hijack you. A wired connection via Ethernet should always have perfect connectivity.

Edit: You did set up a static IP address for your xbox right? Or else port forwarding won't work.
