How Far Can A Franchise Push You (Before You Just Quit)?

considering the fact that I still buy and play the Silent Hill games even through the ration of good games vs mediocre or actively shitty games is exactly 3 to 6 I'd say a franchise can push me pretty far.

After SH:3 I've gone into each game hoping that someone pulled their heads out of their asses and remembered how to tell a good Silent Hill story...at best I leave the experience underwhelmed.


Edit: Also I hold out hope that somebody at Capcom doesn't actively hate Megaman.

Call of duty, 1(UO too)+2 were good, 3 was horrible, 4 was amazing, 5 was meh, 6+ dead for me.

I saw the title and wanted to say exactly that :3

Also I'll throw Age of Empires (the F2P one just urgh) and Empire Earth in here (the third one was quite horrible, to put it nicely, although the series died with the second one a bit already) into the ring

Have you ever given up on a franchise you admired because of one horrible experience? If you haven't what would it take to make you react this way?

No it usually takes several horrible experiences before I'll completely give up on a franchise. There are exceptions to this of course, namely Mass Effect, but that had more to do with EA than it did the franchise itself.

That being said, it's gotten to the point that these days I've come to dread any new installments to franchises that I do enjoy out of fear that everything I enjoy about them will be completely turned on it's head (and/or buttfucked up the ass). It has happened far too often.

And I honetly dont see myself doing that at all. A good example would be COD. people complaing about its yearly sequel. I dont have a single problem with this because I like COD. So IMO they could make COD: Modern Warfare 23, and I would be happy with it. Even if i "DID" get sick of it, I would just take a break with other games, then resume the series from where I left. Its not that hard, people.


Also I just used COD as an example, but this really applies to any game I liked/loved. Give me sequels, so long as they are good (or better), I am golden.

Final fantasy has lost it since 10(square in general has lost the plot).
Mass effect died with 2(bioware sold out and they weren't good enough in the first place to care about).
Assassins creed died on 2.
Ninja gaiden died at 3.
Syndicate (lol, what a joke).

Pretty much anything not made by Rockstar dies for me and i'm just waiting for them to go the way of all the other developers.

Also if Assassin's Creed hadn't changed protagonist this time I would've given up on it, but thankfully it did.

I like assasins creed but I worry its all getting just a bit too convoluted..especially when you leave certain VERY IMPORTANT plot points to DLC....0_0

Well I was enjoying Mass Effect right up until the ending of 3.

Then I just gave up. I occasionly play the multiplayer sometimes, but not often. It's dead to me.

I dont know what or where they will go next....

as much as I love mass effect I just dont think I want to get burned again...but I wont be able to stay away eather...eather way it wont be shepard...

I'd say Ninja Gaiden died at 2. One of the things that made Ninja Gaiden (once you go Black you don't go back) amazing was that its story was batshit insane; just intelligible enough for a basic plot but crazy enough to lead to some awesome settings and fight sequences. I'd say 2 failed in that it tried to make the plot make more sense, when we all know that if Ryu Hyabusa is in a game the plot should just shoot itself in the face.

One of many, but it was really the capstone on the game. I mean, the plot was fractally ludicrous - every inconsistancy brought up two more, half the characters fell flat and the story was full of railroading. There was so much wrong with that game but the baby reaper is a quick and easy thing to mention.

I'm pretty tolerant. I gave the Final Fantasy series 4 strikes, but then the 5th strike came along and I was out.

I only gave it 3. Final Fantasy X-2 (liked the bonus ending), Final Fantasy Return of the Jedi XII and Final Fantasy XIII. What were the games that killed it for you?

OT:It would be near impossible for Bioware to get me to have any intrest in a Mass Effect game. The original ending killed it for me and all the EC did for me was to piss on the body. If they screw up DA 3 then the same thing will happen.

River Song is the exact distance I can be pushed before I stop reacting to a franchise.

More specifically, River Song added to an incompetent Doctor multiplied by three awful long term seasons minus one redeeming side character squared by a massively character decayed companion.

Or to put it simply, everything since RTD left.

No gaming examples yet though.

Finaly someone else! I agree with all that you have said, especaly the stuff about River Song (here is hoping that she stops turning up after Amy and Rory leave), but most of all since Moffat took over the show has just been boring. I have never understood the love that Moffat has. I have found most of his work to be average or boring. I liked Blink. It was not the best thing to ever happen on tv.

I'm not buying another Battlefield game. Between Origin, the web browser based multiplayer searching, the need to be online for single player, and the fact that it refused to run smoothly without an error for more than 30 minutes, I gave up on that game as well as the series.

Did I mention that it felt too much like Call of Duty? No? Well that was also a factor.

I pretty mcuh like that right now with the Legend of Zelda franchise. Skyward Sword was a huge dissapointment to me. Granted as long the next game still remain to be a big explore world than splitting up up into closed sections than I may consdier it.

I don't buy a game because of a franchise. I will pay attention to a new title because of the franchise of which it is a part, and I will then judge it based on its own and its predecessors merit. I will never just buy a game because I liked a previous title in a series.

I can't actually understand the franchise thing. Why do people feel the need to buy every new FIFA or CoD game anually? Did the game really age that much that you can't continue playing it for another year and save £30?

Call of Duty is probably the best example to use. 1 was pretty good (at least when I went back and played it on the PC), 2 was really good, 3 was pretty good, 4 was incredibly meh (and the single most over-rated game in history), 5 was even more meh, 6 was okay, 7 was meh, 8 was semi-meh, and 9 looks okay.

That being said, I quit buying them after 6. I realized every game since 4 has been EXACTLY the same game, and it's essentially the same think as buying a new Madden title every year.

I'm going to say it, it's probably already been said. Sqare Enix and Final Fantasy. Especially burned out on it after X-2. No offense to anyone who liked that game, but to me it seemed like one big Britney Spears video... And I was D-O-N-E. It was already a little unsteady with me in X, then X-2.
Then my brother was playing XIII... I didn't even recognize the combat, the comfortable franchise I had come to know and love was completely different. I divorced that franchise.


Oh well, enough of my ranting.

I saw some people mentioning square, and I have to say that's the big one for me. They made so many games that I loved when I was a kid, so the unlimited slew of shite they have been releasing over the last few years feels a lot like betrayal. I keep an eye out on the gaming news websites to see what's up, but i never really consider buying any of their titles anymore. they're going to have to show something really spectacular in order to win back my custom.

There's never a point I'll just put my money down automatically. If a game is good I'll be more optimistic about the sequel. If a game is bad I'll be more sceptical about the sequel. But either way I'll still want more information than just "it's an [insert-franchise-here] game" in order for me to part with money.

I'm confused by people who say they'll "never buy a game from [insert-company-here] again" on the basis of not liking a number of previous titles. Companies change all the time. Staff change, company strategy changes, new ideas come in. It's perfectly plausible that they will produce a game you like in the future. Even if "they" are a completely different collection of people by then!

By all means be sceptical, look for as much information as you can, get opinions from people you trust, and wait until the price goes down. But just declaring you'll never buy from a particular brand again seems a little strange.

I'm not really a franchise-loyalist. I drop in and out of franchises, sometimes skipping installments, sometimes starting at the third part of a trilogy.

There are some cases where I was quasi-loyal, and in those cases the only way a franchise EVER lost me was by introducing humongous spiders as enemies - i haven't played a single Zelda game after Majora's Mask. Then again, that's not really a choice I make. Being a massive arachnophobe, that's just one of the things one has to live with.
