How far can consoles go?

Let's face it, graphics aren't going to get much better. Sure future consoles will be able to process better detail though it's going to happen. The motivation of creating a new system will eventually become questionable. When it gets to this point, do you think there should be new consoles?

If anything they will have to start making more consoles, in a much shorter time period as technology is accelerating faster than before.

As far as they can go?

They can go as far as PCs can go, but they have to be a little bit behind to not become PCs. That's a major selling point for consoles in that they arn't as "complex" or "tech-phillied" as you have to be with PCs.

Or so I'm told!

yes, talk to someone 120 years ago about a flying machine and they would laugh in your face, they didnt think it was possible, but now here we are with tons of planes. it might seem like there is nothing in the future, there is, there is always something better, be it virtual reality or something else, idk. but there is always something more.

That's rapidly becoming a moot point. Being able to upgrade you HDD and the influx of DLC means consoles are becoming more and more PC-fied.

Wrong. Just wrong. Look at what we've seen in term of graphics just over the last 15 years. Computer technology increase exponentially faster all the time. Just imagine what quantum computer consoles will be like.
The only problem with the technology improving so fast is that you need an ever larger team of artists and programmers to keep up, but I believe that problem will be solved as well eventually.

I think I would invest in future gen consoles if they develop the motion sensor technology as seen in the wii. Perhaps when graphics reach a zenith level of realism then perhaps we will finally get some original games and developers will start to take chances again. Who would buy an updated FIFA game of EA if it was a carbon copy of the last one.

EDIT: Scratch the last sentence.

But nevertheless, they still arn't PCs. Just being able to upgrade your HDD on your PS3 doesn't automatically make it a PC and neither does an influx of DLC. PCs don't have DLC, they have mods and STEAM.

Consoles have to be "dumber" than PCs otherwise they'd be competing with PCs, and all the elitists would call them out on it and you can't really compete with a PC. You'd basically be selling a pre-made PC.

Hopefully we'll get to the point where games are live action, or at least look like it. I know there have been some *terrible* attempts at live action in games, but hopefully we'll get to that point where those games don't suck.

Soon the only difference will be whether or not it connects to a TV.

There will always be room for improvement, there are few, if any, technologies that cannot be improved in the future and there a many ways that the gaming of tomorrow could look like. Some things have already been mentioned like virtual reality and better motion sensors, other things could be more responsive controllers like the controller that gives you an electrical shock for messing up (bad example, I know, but it was all I could think of). One could even imagine that gaming could be carried out entirely through neurological impulses in your brain providing a super-immersive gaming experience.

I'm sure scientist and developers will think of something.

Consoles and graphics will stop being upgraded when we reach the same amount of detail as in real life.

No matter how hard any machine can try, you cannot get more graphically detailed that real life
