I am about to join into teacher training, in order to do this I (obviously) need to be vetted to make sure I haven't been kiddie fiddling or the like.

To actually do this check with modern technology takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, however because of the way the local government and police system is set up it can take up to three months before the results come back, it also costs between £30 and £50. Which your sponsoring school pays. Now this is frustrating for me due to the expense and the wait, I get to be unemployed and broke whilst they get their affairs in order.

But the really stupid part is this, in our cash strapped school system where we struggle for books, the check has to be redone every three years for every member of staff, which sometimes in a large state school can be around the 200 person mark. So that's about £600 pounds out of the school budget, this goes to the governments coffers no doubt to par for moat cleaning etc.

And the final worst kicker is this, if you have been convicted of an offence chances are you will have been fired from your current school and that will show in your reference, if you have committed an offence and not been caught you would not show up on the check anyway.

So after you become a teacher this expensive and pointless checking system does nothing it's more red tape there to screw with people and milk more money out to whatever quango is in charge!

Well, I can imagine the background check. A teacher at a nearby school where I am was convicted of holding and distributing child porn, so they'd want to be safe. But your government needs to distribute funds for education evenly, or the government needs to reimburse the school.

When I was trying to get into doing volunteering work for a system called "Outset", it was an absolute nightmare. The longest part was when I had to get a criminal check done which did take a few months. Which I will admit, I was actually fearful because not only I lied about having no mental problems to the centre I'd work at, but I don't think I actually mentioned having any on the criminal check form nor was I sure if I had anything on my criminal record (mental problems from before made me do weird things). From the beginning of "well, this is the kind of thing I'd like to do" to actually starting, it took a year to be able to do volunteering work.

Which then, on the first day, I'm fortunate enough to come across the strangest person I had met during my year and a half time there who kept mentioning the idea about helping him learn how to do the computers at his house. Ever since then though, it's been smooth and I haven't had to do another criminal check.

It honestly annoyed me how long the process took, and it still annoys me that even 6 months on, despite applying for the certificate to show I've done 50 hours volunteering work, I still haven't got it which I do need as proof I've done the hours so I can put it on my CVs in the future.

I think you'll find its actually 6000 pounds rather than 600 pounds. (200 x 30 = 6000)

Kind of 50/50 about this - I think it is important to check these things in a way, I mean the more difficult you make it for the actual offenders the better right? But the problem is a lot of innocent teachers get caught up in it as well. And obviously, like you said, there are some people who have yet to offend (or haven't been caught) and won't show up on these records. The media definately aren't doing anybody any favours with all the fear they stir up on a daily basis.

Bloody nightmare, I don't envy you that.

It's worth pointing out though that the government incurs an expense when they make these checks. As long as the charge is proportionate to the cost (and I'm not saying it is; I just don't know) then I don't see a problem.

Same with obtaining National Police Clearances.

If it comes back clear it only tells the employer that you've been lucky or clever enough to avoid conviction.
