How good is your eyesight? Can you see a difference in various graphics?

I got to see Linus Tech Tips do a video where he tested regular people playing on a 60 hz monitor and a 144 hz monitor. Most failed to ID the 60 vs 144. He could. So, different people really can or cannot tell the difference.

I can certainly tell the difference between my Wii U and my Xbox 1 OG. But, sadly, I don't think I can tell the difference between my OG, which often plays at 720 P or 30 FPS and my Xbox 1 X, which plays at true 4K 30 FPS. (or 60?). I played some Witcher 3 on my OG today. Looked pretty awesome. Breath of the Wild? Not so much but still very nice. Washed out on a 65" 4K but does, as a game, what it is supposed to do.
Can you tell the differences or not? On what are you seeing a difference?

I'm only accustomed to playing a really low frame rate and resolution, so only low to intermediate jumps are visibly different to me.

Further, I'm blind enough as it is so my sight can't discern the difference between anything higher than about 45-50fps. Hell, on bad days I see frame skips IRL!

Not really? My eyesight isn't the best, always worn glasses since I was a kid, and now I have bifocals. I mean I can generally notice a marked difference depending on the games in question, but it's not really something I've ever put much emphasis on.

Graphics sometimes be janky.

I really only notice farm rates when they fluctuate. As in, I'd much rather have a stable 30 than a range of 50-70.

Here is another one:
AND another one:

I notice a pretty big difference, I am most comfortable with the higher fps, everything else just looks choppy/ broken to me.I also see more colors than most though on the color tests as well, I can see every shade pretty much so I usually notice the different pixel shading in graphics pretty well. Sometimes it bothers me, but most of the time I am more concerned about what I can do in games more than how it looks. I will take poor graphics if it is fun and I can do what I want..but then again I actually LIKE retro gaming too.. so there's that. XD

I can tell the difference in refresh rate pretty easily. But I don't really mind playing at 30fps in third person games if the framerate is consistent. As for first person games, 60 fps is the bare minimum that I can tolerate.

Good enough to see the difference between 30 and 60 fps. Higher framerates too if you put them side by side with 60. I readily notice if a game drops below 60 (or 30), as well as bad frame times if they're frequent. I can tell most common resolutions apart. Except 1440p. I tend to think that's just 1080p.

I envy you that. As someone who is colour blind (not achromatic though, so it's not all that bad), stuff like my wife describing certain flowers to me while I see something else (and being thoroughly aware of it) is a source of much sadness.

Would the colorblind glasses help you? I think they do a test and match you up with the glasses that work best for your condition. Have you ever been able to try out anything like that yet?

Designing, painting and drawing are such a passion of mine, it would be really hard on me to go through that as well.

Hmmm, perhaps. I have tritanomaly which is one of the rarer forms of colour blindness (but I think the principle for correction would be the same as for red-green colour blindess/deuteranomaly, if they can apply it to the shorter wavelengths involved).

*wonders if they deliver to south-east Asia(!)

I can imagine. Colour perception is such an artistically nuanced 'sense', losing it would have quite a severe impact.

I am pretty certain they do, hell you might be able to find some for less there since they usually mark everything up ridiculously for the US and Europe. You should look into it, and hopefully finally be able to see what your wife has been describing. That would be awesome! :D

Here is what I found about options, I am not sure how much they will help but it may be worth investigating:

These seem to work for some people, but not for others depending on what their specific issues are, but I would read the reviews about specific issues with colors to see if you think they would help before dropping $ on them. You may also be able to find them for less as well or somewhere you can return them if they don't work well for you:

While that is a technically sound demonstration, things get more muddled when applying various peripheral elements and game systems to the visuals, which are ultimately what people see when playing an actual game. Usually most people won’t even think about frame rates in an action adventure title like Tomb Raider or God of War, unless it drops so low that input response is noticeably hampered.

Having said that, games where timing is critical like fighting games or intense action games should always target 60fps min.

Interesting... worth a look if nothing else. Given my 'unique' suite of sight issues, definitely needs lots of research at the very least, but that alone would be worth the effort. Thanks for the links.

Anytime. I just hope you can find something that helps. Even if it doesn't solve all of the problem, having any improvement would likely make life a bit more comfortable. Keep me updated with how your search goes. Good luck!

Toss my name in the Good enough for 30-to-60 FPS differentiation pile, as well as the What the fuck is the deal with 4K and 8K resolutions anyway?! pile.

I'm primarily a PC gamer with an occasional shift to console (Ghost of Tsushima has a pretty effective basic hook) and I mostly play in 1080p. Anything close to 4K is only ever useful if you're in the competitive field or really live for frame-perfect gameplay - but honestly?

I kind of have to scoff at anyone who tells me ultra-high resolution packs are the end-all of certain tentpole releases. Skyrim is nine freaking years old, all you're doing with that prospective texture pack is needlessly hog up some RAM, and the gameplay loop and world design weren't put in place to account for panels with ridiculously high refresh rates.

I'd maybe go 4K for the occasional nature documentary, but I don't see the point of changing your entire hardware for that specific set of compliant resolutions when most TV networks are struggling to produce content that fits the scale. News reports shot in 1080p with clothing and makeup design straight out of the SD era makes for a horrendous combination; I've started to hate pinstriped suits as a result! Not to mention the wrinkles on everyone's faces, ew!
