Either I suck up too often, or my hardware is too weak and I have to deal with low performance. So, not as much as it could be, perhaps.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 by far the best at this. The character is you, which I finds add so much to relating with them and letting you mind wander into the game. Also first person is by far the best way to be pulled in. I've started playing Mass Effect, (which seems pretty good so far) but the 3rd person kills the immersion. I'm very aware that I'm controlling a character.
I totally agree with you. Fallout 3 is by far the most immersive game I've played, but I can't stand the 3rd person perspective. Hours pass by so quickly whilst playing it.
But I don't find every 1st person game immersive; a case in point is MW2. I blame that on the online multiplayer...

Depends on the game, a really good game can suck me in.
like in kingdom hearts 2, I found myself outraged when Ruki throws the wooden sword at you, and at the ending I almost cried.

I get immersed kind of easily. I usually believe that I'm actually fighting with/talking to/shooting at/standing near real beings. Like for example, I play CoD MW2, and to put it cliche-ly, I lose the world around me. I BECOME Roach/Allen/Ramirez or whoever/soap, and have full-on conversations with everyone else. I even sometimes use military speak (I.E. Chemo: "There's an enemy by (insert object here!") Me(Roach) "Roger that!") It's actually kind of fun. I normally get my feeling immersed in a game, but my mind only get immersed in the GOOD ones. Like for example, my feeling were immersed in Bioshock. But my mind gets immersed in games like MW2 (Obviously.) and, eh...I haven't played any other game in so long I can't remember. But whenever I play an RPG my mind develops my own character, and then when I actually go to sleep, or black out, I become that character, and fight with whoever I was fighting with, wherever I was.

Edit: I forgot about the music, OH the MUSIC! If a game has music worth at least one shit I just LOSE myself in it. I even play the white house battle music from MW2 whenever I want a feeling of sadness, and hatred at the same time, and an adrenaline rush.

IMHO its better to be more immersed than less in a game.. but few games actually suceed at making it right.. too often we see cinematics, deadly QTEs, words that pop up on screen, a poor AI pathfinding or when the scenario gives you arbitrary game overs when you dont follow the plot railroad.. and many other things that burst your bubble and remind you that you are playing a game.

My current time waster is just to explore the world in Oblivion (OOO mod)... the game in itself is "meh", but dungeons and places are fun to explore, many things are hidden.

FEAR had a good immersive atmosphere. Better when playing in the dark.

STALKER too, had its moments.

Myst (and the others) was good because the interface was minimal, and the graphics were gorgeous.

Half Life 2 pulled me in a good bit, to where after I had stopped playing I kept looking up to make sure no barnacles were going to eat me.

And after playing Left 4 Dead for hours on end, I almost screamed when I went upstairs at 2 in the morning and ran into my dad. I thought he was a Hunter <_<

Bioshock had moments, but every time I went through water, I was pulled out.

different kind of immersion... in games where it's humanity vs aliens/oppressors's etc etc.. i often find myself thinking about what would happen if 'reinforcements' from other games came in.
for example, i'd imagine what would happen if in halo the colonial marines from AVP joined the fight. or if the halo marines helped the COG in gears of war. or ghost recon got inserted into city 17. etc etc
like, what weapons from one franchise would work well in the one i'm playing, armour, stuff like that.

To the point where I don't even hear my gram yelling for me. =] And she has an annoying loud yell that you can hear a mile away. Although at times I can't hear Tom when he's talking to me and that can be quite disastrous! xD To say the least anyway.

I get pretty heavily immersed in games - usually to the point where when I finish a really good one, I have a day or two where I just can't bring myself to play anything else. If I push it too far, I get dreams about the game as well.
i have had that happen. Kotor one and Mass Effect one, After Mass Effect I was in quite a daze for the next couple of days. Not knowing what to do with my self after it. Lol it was a tough month but damn that game got me.

It depends on the game. FEAR is probably one of the most immersive games to me. Especially when I'm alone, and it's night time, and my TV is shut off.

The only games I can't get immersed in is Source game. I think it's because I've been a mapper for two years, so I spend more time trying to figure out how the map was made.

If the game world is even remotely compelling, I can get drawn in real easily. Mass Effect 2 is the most recent example. The scary part is that I've started having dreams that I'm Commander Shepard. That's either a compliment to Bioware or an insult to me and I'm not sure if I want to know which.

I can become pretty immersed into strategy games. Whenever I'm playing as a sniper in a game with an open field, I like to find a secluded spot, turn up the volume, and turn to face every single sound nearby me.

Some people told me when I'm in this ultra-perceptive mode I begin to whisper, almost as if I were the one in the brush.

I played Oblivion so long one time that I actually thought some of the characters were my friends. Seriously, I went crazy for about 10 seconds.

I tend to get incredibly immersed really easily. When I used to play driving games, I would lean in the direction I was turning. Shooters do it the most for me, though. The most recent example I can think of is Left 4 Dead on expert mode. It really puts you on edge knowing how easily you can die, especially during a pistol-only run.

Oddly enough, I also get incredibly immersed in real-life games involving firearms. I'm damn good at laser tag and paintball because two minutes in I stop seeing a game course and start seeing a warzone. Instinct and adrenaline takes over and I wind up being one of the most tactical and efficient people on an unofficial team that my friends know.
