How is Mogworld?

I generally do not buy books, prefer borrowing them from the library. I enjoyed reading some of Yahtzee's short writings on his website and watching his zero punctuation. I never really got into MMORPGS though. I do like Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, which seem to be who Mogworld's writing style is compared to.

I'm assuming that some people here probably read Mogworld by now considering the website and figure this is the best forum to ask about the novel on. Is Mogworld worth buying?

Zero and Extra Punctuation are the best things Yahtzee has ever done. Nearly everything else I've seen of his is just... not good. They had the first bit of Mogworld on here and I really wanted to like it but I couldn't even force myself to enjoy it.

But maybe it got better. I never bought it, I'm just telling you my first impressions.

I saw the preview before maybe I should try reading that. But that is like what the first ten pages of the book? I wonder what people's general opinions of the complete novel are.

Yes it is.

I'm not a fans of MMO's either, but this book is funny as all hell, and easily worth your time. If you like funny, interesting, stories and great, interesting, funny characters, BUY THIS BOOK!

Seriously, you don't need to like MMO's to enjoy this book. If anything it berates MMO's in general.

I've read it, and I really liked it. It was funny, but still had a good story. It doesn't take itself too seriously (the main cast are zombies). The extract they posted is actually from about the middle of the book which is strange. I suppose it's because the whole "In an MMO" aspect doesn't rear it's head too strongly until then.

I got quite a few good chuckles from it and am very glad I got it. When it comes to books people's experiences can vary wildly. If you see it on a self and have the cash then buy it and see. There are far worse books you could read.

Glad I didn't read the preview then. Maybe I will get it on amazon soon or next time I'm in a Barnes and Nobles see if it is there.

That preview wasn't the first bit. There was quite a bit before that.

I liked the book.

I loathed the first half of the book and didn't really get interested until the second half. Much of that first section is spent aimlessly wandering about with a bunch of in-jokes I didn't get.

It's great, yeah. I usually read it on the train and get a few funny looks from laughing out loud at some book.
You can really tell it's written by Yahtzee, because he uses the same sort of jokes he does in Zero punctuation, such as I think one of them was, "it look like it had been set fire to and then stamped on by an angry horse."
I saw a sign at the station that said something like, "The LORD will always have mercy on his followers" which is the sort of stuff one of the characters keeps blurting out, so it gave me a giggle.

Lolwut?

While most of his webcomic work is shaky at best, Cowboy Comics are pants-wettingly hilarious. Go, read it, and be enlightened.

I found it hilarious, although the final quarter/third of the book (where it all gets a bit more serious) is less amusing, but then again that's an issue with a lot of comedy books (Pratchett does it too).

Buy it (£4.99 from play.com), love it.

I find the serious stuff in Pratchett to be typically still entertaining to read. I'm less sure about Yahtzee being able to do that.

Yeah, that is one of the areas (the other being his descriptions - usually brief and intended humorously) where he really shows that he's not a dedicated writer. But the sheer speed of the humour makes up for it, trust me.

I think I prefer brief to long descriptions anyway. Some really good writers are brief with descriptions actually. Being light on descriptions doesn't mean one can't be a dedicated writer I think.
