How many is too many?

So, I'm playing through Halo: Reach on Legendary at the moment (The last mission is a whore.) and I was just wondering what anyone else thought. How many bullets is too many? I mean, all of us who have played on Legendary will know that you kinda do need to conserve ammo. So how much ammo are you willing to use with your scarce and precious MDR for fighting enemies?

1 shot for grunts, 2 shots for jackals, 75 shots for elites, and a billion shots for hunters.

I'm willing to use as many shots as necessary to kill anything.

The great thing about the halo games is that every weapon is capable of killing anything, so long as you're within the correct range for that weapon, so you never really have to worry about running out of ammo, since there's always something else on the ground a few steps away.

On the past mission, I pretty much ended up using plasma pistols for the last couple of enemy waves, because I was out of everything else, and you know what? It didn't make it that much harder.
