Interesting article regarding the origins of Mario's naming (found via Slashdot):
http://technologizer.com/2010/04/25/mario/

Who would have thought that Mario's namesake is a rich italian real estate mogul?

Oh. I thought they decided to make an Italian stereotype as their character and, as such, gave him a stereotypical name.

I think Jumpman was his name for a while or something.

And originally he was a carpenter.

Aye, in Donkey Kong he was originally "Jumpman". Most of his appareil came from the fact that they had to detail him in pixels, so his clothes had to be bright and move while he was running.

In the original donkey kong he was an electrician dubbed jump man because that was his defining feature

I thought they really liked Saved By the Bell, and named him after Mario Lopez.

Of course, they looked into the future to watch it, though.

I know how Mario got his name, I read about it in the Guinness Book of Video Game Records 2008. He was named after Nintendo of America's landlord at the time when Donkey Kong was first brought over to N. America from Japan. Prior to that he was known as "Jumpman".

I'm surprised people didn't know this.

Did you know that the "Your Name Please" song in Earthbound contains a sample from the Monty Python Show theme?

NO YOU DIDN'T.

He was named after nintendos landlord Mario *Legasi* (or something like that) which has been previously stated.

But if you are unlucky and have sat through the god awful live action film he says his name is Mario Mario.

Actually Jumpman was a game. I had it, and it was pre-donkey kong. i don't remember the console. I think it was on commodore 64, i was like 7. It sorta looked like donkey kong but you had to run around and diffuse or collect bombs. and dodge lines..maybe bullets? idk.

no edit..just wiki'd it.. i stand corrected. I was 4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumpman
I remember watching me and my friends parents sit around the living room and play it at night. I sucked at that game >.> but i def remember it. But OT yes you are correct, the character jumpman after a few different incarnations did evolve into the mario that we know today. But i wouldn't say Mario IS jumpman. Different character really but evolved over the years to whatever he had to be. Saying that Jumpman was renamed mario is like saying apes where renamed humans.
