None.

I don't watch let's plays. I don't watch streamers.

Watching someone else play a game without any kind of critique or analysis was never my cup of tea.

I would be lying if I said that YouTube coverage never influenced my purchases, but I would not say that any of the stuff that I watch can be considered to be a Lets Play.

Just the Battlefield series comes to mind. I found the Battlefield Friends cartoon and a year later I became a pretty serious BF4 player.

I'm sure there were others, but nothing really stands out to me.

Ok you do understand that I provided multiple terms for the nebulous act of "playing a game online for people to watch" right? I mean that's why I put the "etc" in there?

I'm an old man in training and ergo Letsplays and Streamers are the young person thing I don't understand and ergo hate with the power of a thousand suns. So a big old fat zero in my case.

I think the most influential videos I watch are unedited game dev walkthroughs of games as I'm usually checking games out prior to release vs after release. The TC's question was a bit all-encompassing as it included game reviews and videos showing off game mechanics. A passionate review of someone loving a game has got me interested enough to check out games and I'm sure there's been in-depth game mechanics videos that have done the same. But, it seems like the core question is how many games you bought because of actual game streams, which would be nada for me. I really only "watch" streams for the audio (when doing long drives for work) or to check out how others got through certain sections vs how I did it. I honestly don't get why people watch streams of games they haven't played as to me they're only interesting when you know the game and pretty much "get" everything going on and you might learn some strats or something while also being entertained by the streamer obviously. The only game videos that I actually enjoy watching of a game I haven't played are troll level playthroughs of Super Mario Maker (but I know everything about Mario games so I get everything going on onscreen) and even then I wouldn't watch an unedited stream of that.

That's you. Everyone has their own reasons and you answered your own question: Entertainment or comparing strategies and choices. It's nice seeing other views on a game, even if they don't line up with your own. I'm not going to watch every single streamer out there, but I know the ones that I like or find entertaining. It started with me watching certain LP's because I did not have the game or console at the time. When No More Heroes was LP'd by Chip, I did not have a Wii yet. When Evil Within 1 was LPd by Two Best Friends, I did not have a PS4 until the summer of 2015. And even then, I did not pick up the game until 2017 after playing the sequel. If you don't that is fine, but it is not that hard to understand why people like watching streamers/lp'ers. There are certain ones I don't touch due to their attitudes or nasty behavior, but I am old enough to know who to watch or not. Even some of my favorite lp'ers, I don't watch every single game they play. Sometimes I skip out right either because the game I am playing I don't want spoiled, not interested in the game itself, or sometimes they play the game so badly or blame the game for not following directions, it hurts.

Trying to remember specifically, but in general it seems I’ve always at least read more about games, whether it was EGM, Nintendo Power, Gamepro, etc, onto Gamespot, GamesRadar, Game Informer, IGN, etc. onto watching various preview content on YouTube of games I was already interested in. These days it’s almost impossible to go into a game completely “blind”.

I’ve done that with a few PS+ *free* titles of the month though. Vampyre is featured this month, but I’ve heard certainly a few things about it already. Still going to give it a whirl soon for something hopefully a bit different.

Raft (Markiplier), Don't Starve (can't remember), Witness (SGF), Oxygen Not Included (can't remember), ICEY (mention by somebody... Yahtzee?), Return of the Obra Dinn (SGF). That's all I think. The only ones I actually ended up liking were ONI and RotOD.

Yeah I tend to do that too, if it's a narrative story I enjoy. I've even had a few people I watch, specifically tell us to not spoil yourselves on this, as it's really good. I forget the game, but it's that second title by the guy that made The Stanley Parable, and MATN (Many A True Nerd) was playing it, and it got to a certain point, and there is a significant edit, and he's like "ok so, based on what this game is about, and what seems to be the intent of the developer, I can't in good conscience, show you any more. I can say it's a really interesting game, and if you like what you've seen so far, you should go get it yourself and experience it." Given the context, I can see why he did that.

I'm not sure it counts as a let's play, but the only game I've ever bought off the recommendation of someone not a close friend was Just Cause 2 based off the Zero Punctuation review. And yeah I remember it being a fun sandbox game that was just about 50% too big for its samey gameplay. Blowing up the military outpost by bringing a gunship and using infinite rockets gets boring after the 50th time, especially when there's like 200 left.

Only game I can think of is Overcooked from watching Suzy and Barry play it in KKG. Watched a couple of episodes, thought it looked like a neat co-op game to play with my girlfriend. That's it.

None I think, though certainly sometimes I wish I had (and so not made the purchase based on reviews - Ghost of Tsushima being one I just can't get the love for, though I may have given up too early).
