How much do you care about winning?

I don't especially care. I just play to have fun. That doesn't mean that I won't try very hard to win, however if I lose. It is just a video game.
Also, sometimes losing is more fun than winning. I'd rather have a very hard fought loss than an overwhelming win almost any day.

It depends, actually. When I play ranked matches in fighting games, I really, REALLY want to win and I get frustrated when I lose. From this Saturday (22.12.2012) I've banned myself from any ranked game. When I play in lobbies or any mode of such kind I a) don't care about winning or losing, which leads to b) I actually enjoy playing those games. It's "Yay!" when I win and "OK, next one" when I lose. The only problem is that it's kinda hard to find someone to play player match in Blazblue.

About shooters: there are only two multiplayer shooters I play: TF2 and ME3's multiplayer. They don't have, well, ranking system, so I enjoy them without thinking about my win/loss ratio.

Ok, so we would all prefer to win our games, that's a given but how much does winning really matter to you? Must you always, always win or dang it there goes my good mood :/ or are you happy to just sometimes win and shrug off the few losses or somewhere inbetween? Does it vary from game to game?

I recently restarted playing UMVC3 . And in all honesty i don't mind losing it helps me learn and motivates me to get better . I'm running a new team ( X-23 , rocket racoon and ironman) , the synergy is amazing . As dor your team synergy , honestly , from what i know , that's terrible . I could give a long description as to WHY , but i won't . Also you are brave to make a PW team . Unless you REALLY know what you are doing it's hard to be efficient with him .

I do try to make a team without PW sometimes, X-23 cannot be dropped since she's the only one I am genuinely good with, Vergil is just awesome, though all I can do with him is try to cross up with the behind teleport and that's practically it. You can pushblock almost anything and punish it with Stinger I find. Such an amazing move. You can punish people like Akuma who think they can get free chip with a full screen beam super. Dash > Stinger > free combo.

I just can't find a good replacement for him though, Ammy is too squishy and I can't do much with her except spam Okami Shuffle and forward H, i've tried Nova, Viper, Dante, Trish and Morrigan, my team doesn't feel right without PW heading it up. Oh and I have a newfound almost respect for the ChrisG Morrigan keepaway teams because my Morrigan sucks, if you fail at playing pure keepaway you look like such a dick.

It is impossible for me to get a decent amount of fireballs on the screen at all. Being technical enough to continuously fly/unfly, calling a safe Doom assist and taking note of what your opponent is doing takes some real skill. It's still boring to watch and cheap as hell though.

If you don't keep up with the scene, he uses Doom's missle assist and Morrigan's clone hyper to fill the entire screen with fireballs and the very top of the screen is covered by the missles. Bullet Hell doesn't even come close to describing it. Morrigan still builds hyper bar even in her buffed form so all the missles and fireballs gives her the metre to constantly have it on. Considering Dante and Vergil can't build bar when they're in Devil Trigger that's hopelessly unfair

Having a third member with good mobility and easier combos should make me win more matches since Phoenix often dies quickly leaving most matches as a 2v3 from the start almost, but not having him on the team makes me play worse. It's weird.

In multiplayer videogames, which I lose at often, where there are no stakes I don't give a fuck, however, when it comes to bets or a competition where I can win something I sum up my feelings with a phrase that goes "It's not about winning or losing. It's about winning."

As for PW/x-23/virgil, you got nothing for zoning ( as far as i can tell ). PW NEEDS a good assist just so you can pick up evidence ( with his shield ). If you were to drop PW i may have some suggestions for x-23. There was a x-23/Dante team at evo 2012. It was pretty good , he used jam session with incoming characters to use x-23 level 3 super which meant a dead character . Also i would heavily suggest a beam/projectile assist to help x-23 get in . I personally use ironmans unibeam since it has the bigest hitstun , but hawkeye/taskmaster/deadlpoool/doom , basically anything that can cover the ground/ air. Since x-23 has no ranged options . Dormammu also works , he can help extend comboes . If you want to use ammy , i recommend putting her on anchor just so that both your characters can take advantage of her cold star assist . If not ,level 3 xfactor virgil is a is a GREAT anchor BUT like strider ,once xfactor wear off you are kind of doomed . Speaking of strider , strider could also be an asset with his vajdra assist , but then you really have a low health team .

Also random question , stick or pad? Just out of curiosity . If you are on xbox i would love to get a few matches , i have local tournaments in my city ( montreal) and would like to bring x-23 , rocket racoon , ironman up to part to take them there lol.

This is a trick question for me. We're all taught at an early age that winning isn't the most important thing, that 'tis better to have a fun loss than a droll win. That we play games in the name of fun, or entertainment, or brief amusement. And that the morally correct answer is: "The real winner is the one that has the most fun".

To which I say, fine. To win is to have fun. I get it. Fun is a pretty subjective notion, though. None of us like the same kinds of games, to begin with. What's fun in one doesn't necessarily translate onto the next, either. Same with winning: when do you win a game? Once you get all multiple endings on a same save file, unlock all alternate costumes, complete all sidequests and optional thingies, when you do all of these in the fastest time possible without sharking your way through? Do you need to do it in all possible difficulty settings? Can you use a walkthrough for that one puzzle? Is it only a partial win if I don't pick up the subsequent sequels and multi-platform spin-offs?

It all depends on the expectations I set up for myself. The key thing is, I think, shoot out for your own expectations rather than the game's. To me, winning is meeting my own expectations, not the game's. And I have the most fun when I set out to do so, and this fun is partly fueled by my level of commitment to the story, my involvement with the characters and how challenged I feel by the experience. To me, winning and having fun are interralated like that.

It really all depends on the way the game went. I much prefer a close victory where the battle was close and balanced than to crush or be crushed by overwhelming force. I hate getting utterly destroyed and I find utterly destroying others to be boring.

I'd rather fail while having a blast than win while doing a tedious grind.

Now when it comes to competitive multiplayer, the only thing that pisses me off is the immaturity of some people, be they allies or opponents. My usual take on PvP losses is "Well, you win some, you lose some". Having played a good game matters more, especially in team based games.

this is my general feeling of things, the only time i get pissed is when someone is being a douche nozzle and using the cheese strategy (most games have some strategy, that is just ridiculous OP/cheesy to use.) and then acting like it's all skill, then i'll get pissed and do everything in my power to smash them (which i usually do, and in turn, give them a taste of their own medicine before they rage quit)

Enjoyment is what matters to me. I'm probably one of the least competitive players out there, which has earned me the ire of a few hardcore TF2 and DOTA 2-ers in the past. There's several games wherein the community absolutely looks down on any kind of goofing off whatsoever, even if it doesn't impact the team or the game's overall result. I'm not a troll by that definition, but I'm not as concerned with my sentry placement or choice of sniping coop as others would be, and going top, mid or bot typically is the sort of decision I make on a personal whim. Whatever seems like it'll be fun works for me.

In single-player games, immersion and narrative quality are gateways to enjoyment for me. Winning is just a happy coincidence or a design affectation resulting from the fact that human nature makes it so we both want to win, and expect it to happen. There's some games where I'll roll with that without the least bit of trouble (e.g. putting the game on Casual in Saints Row: The Third) but others where difficulty factors become part of the fun. That'd be Dark Souls.

Then there's games you can't really win or lose. The Sims 3 is awesome at giving you an unrestrained power trip and doesn't judge you for driving a household's economy, hopes and dreams into the ground. You're allowed to make your fun in any way you'd see fit.

I care about winning in the sense that there isn't much point in playing a game unless you try to win(or are teaching someone how to play). That said I will not rage or be upset if I lose and I have no problem losing but I will always try to win without using douchy tactics such as spawn camping. I won't ***** at people in game or point out if they are bad unless they are trying to make others feel bad.

Although, I will pass comments to my friends on teamspeak if someone is bad so as they don't rely on them. For example, if my friend is jungling in LoL I may tell him not to feed someone on our team if they aren't making use of the gold. There is no point in a fed APC that can't carry when that gold could have gone to the ADC who can or vice versa.

I will say I never use assists, ever. I did when PW's Turnabout assists were fully invincible and came out ridiculously fast. Press the Witness assists then won games on its own. Good times :/

It's a mixture of being terrified of a Happy Birthday and outright forgetting I have assists. Even when I take Trish solely for her assist, I forget to use it.

I can't really play X-23 as a reliable anchor, she's in second because I rely on her to basically wreck the other team on her own/get PW into Turnabout. I never really play her as a proper comeback character. It happens sure, her lvl 3 DESTROYS any incoming character with X-Factor

Her Rage Trigger hyper DHCs perfectly into PW's Maya hyper for a free Objection! That's the one point of synergy I can identify, Vergil's Rapid Slash assist would be good GTFOff tool for PW if I ever remembered to use it as well.

I play on a pad, buying a stick is probably going to hinder me rather than help and it will cost me money for no reason.

Btw, I have no fucking combos, except the one instakill PW Turnabout relaunch combo. It 100-0s someone like Vergil with only one super bar used. I only have fail day one combos for the rest, I can reliably reset with X-23 though. She's just too mobile and I spam her Neck Slice allllll day. Looks unsafe on block? NOPE! Think you can punish it with a pushblock maybe? Never seen anyone do it though

Like I said, nothing is difficult after playing Dark Souls, not even Dark Souls.

Try Sine Mora on insane, really. That is difficult. Yet is still goes out of its way to help you out even then, but it's still difficult (cause even if you know all the enemies' moves, there's no one thing to counter them and you have to adapt on the fly).

I enjoy a challanging and fair game involving a contest in skills. I would rather have a loss in that regard than win a game where I have a leg up or the ones I am playing against are at a disadvantage. Infact, some of my best experiances in DoW have been losses.

I never use the c-stick. I either charge the smash all the way or use a different move. Anyway, the person I'm thinking of as I write this played as Roy and mastered the art of not moving at all and just c-sticking anyone who came near him. Roy's c-stick smashes are crazy fast, so depending on who I was, it would be a very long match. Between the Roy and the occasional Pikachu c-stick/thunder spam, I was not a happy camper. Lost story short, most people use the c-stick, but he truly c-sticked. When Brawl came out and he tried the shake-smash option with the wiimote, his game fell apart

I generally only play single-player.

However, I do like winning sometimes, but mostly it just matters if I am enjoying myself. If I am having a good enough time playing with others and everyone is laid back, I don't mind if we lose a few games. Sometimes you have a good gaming session, and sometimes you have a bad one. I usually stop playing multi-player games when 'winning' has very obviously overridden 'fun'. Or we get the Team Captain that no one appointed and eventually also turns into Captain Obvious. Someone yelling at me, whether it's my fault or not, does not a fun time make. It may be time for Captain McRagey-Pants to find another hobby.

In single-player, I prefer that I progress as a player. This may or may not mean that I "win". For example, in Tetris, you can really try to top your previous efforts.

In multi-player, I don't need to win, but I definitely don't like getting stomped all over.

oh i'm familiar with roy, i used him in melee as my secondary, and ike is my primary in brawl, but i'm not a spammer of the c stick, i use it only when i have them near an edge

but he used the wii mote on brawl!?!? once again, everyone i know plugs that gamecube controller in for brawl, if you use the wii mote you are at a severe disadvantage.

I can lose, and for the most of the part, I usually have fun too anyways. Except if I am losing HORRIBLY (Spawn camped in FPS half the match, begin the first to die in a co op game, and stuff like that), otherwise I dont usually mind that.
