How much does a band's name matter?

I'm asking this because the current band I'm in has this really ridiculous name, and it came about as a joke when we were just thinking of a name to play this festival under when we were just starting out. People found the performance awesome and really loved the name.

But now a decent amount of time has passed and we're actually starting to write and record some really good stuff, we've had one played on our local BBC radio and now I'm beginning to consider that the name should be changed, because I feel like the music we're making as a collective is really good; but the professional sound isn't reflected by the name; you're more likely to assume we're just taking the absolute piss, and I fear people will be somewhat turned away by the impression it gives off... I don't want to lose potential listeners simply because of something as trivial as the name.

So guys, has a band name ever seriously influenced your decision to try listening to that band?

And how many of you would look at the name "Captain Fabulous and the Rainbow Brigade" and be quick to shrug it off as just overly random and not give the music a chance? *my main issue with the name is that it's too long*

My initial response to the question was "enough," and now that I've read the op... It was actually surprisingly accurate. I rarely see the name of the band before I hear their music, but if your name doesn't fit the style (subjective and cultural I know, but there's overlap among people's reactions), then I might not take it as seriously. Especially if someone is telling me to listen to them.

So yeah I think it matters, maybe more, maybe less depending on the person, but if you're not attached to the name then I'd change it. If you are attached to the name, then I wouldn't.

Also I think Captain Fabulous and the Rainbow brigade is too long a name. Shorter names are better for me. 5 syllables or less I think is good.

A band's name will generally only convince me to listen to one or two of their songs if it's amusing or thought-provoking enough. I feel that a band's name should fit the music that they like to play first and foremost, however. That name you gave is an amusing one that suggests cheery and bright music, so if that's what the band produces then people will likely respond more favourably.

As long as you haven't named your band something absolutely dire like "Chungus Knuckletease And The Creamy Slices", I think your prospects are looking pretty good! ^^

I'd say any type of name can work, but it has to fit the style of the band's music. You want to be selling a consistent brand. "Captain Fabulous and the Rainbow Brigade" sounds to me to be a light-hearted LGBT themed band, if that's who you are then it's a good match, if you're going for something more serious or on the other end of the scale, grimdark, then you should probably think about changing the name pronto.

That's a...very good question and one that I'm not sure how to answer.

I know the people ahead of me have said that any type of name will work as long as it fits the style of the band and was something I initially agreed with. Then I thought about it some more and wondered how true that was...

If you did not know what genres these bands played, could you tell me what kind of music they played? I just took names off the top of my head (and hopped onto Youtube's music to grab some names) so this might not be well represented but except for maybe Tool (and Five Finger Death Punch is a pretty easy one), could you tell what they played?

To sum up my ramblings, I think the name is more important than you would think but less important than you would think (so a lot of help I've been ). If you like your name, go with it. If you don't (or if you're doubting it...), it might be worth considering a change.

If your band ends up being more funk-oriented, I think the name could work. Funk is a rather flamboyant genre, so a name so extravagant seems like it would fit well. Aside from that, I really can't say. The more I think about it, the more I realize that a lot of band names don't make a whole lot of sense. I guess all I can say is just go with what feels right. I know that's probably vague and unhelpful, but it's all I've got. For the record, I actually quite like the name.

A really cool name (and yes, "cool" can be subjective) can definitely get me to pay a little more attention to a band. The opposite is also very much true as well. I very often find that it seems punk bands or very heavy bands choose names more on their "F the man!" or "Dude, we're so evil metal hardcore it hurts!" factor rather than anything else and it does actually cause me to A.) roll my eyes and B.) totally disregard them instantly without even listening to their music. Also, if you look at the bands that are considered memorable and/or classic, you'll generally see that naming does actually seem to have some fairly standard "rules." You rarely see obnoxious, overly long, profanity laced, hard to pronounce, etc. names on the list.

All that said, the band name in the OP doesn't really strike me as being particularly bad outside of it's extreme length. It is a little hard to tell just by looking at it what sort of music the band would play but that is not necessarily a bad thing. A name that goes against the band's genre can be both jarring and extra memorable.

For the genre I listen to... a lot... at least for me. A band with that doesn't have a standout name, tends to get overlooked by me. Usually to my own downfall. *glances at Northlane* But bands with names like Sleeping With Sirens, Of Mice & Men, Pierce the Veil, Hands Like Houses, etc. Those bands all got my attention because of the names. It was why all those years ago I clicked on their music video over someone else. It took me quite a while to find bands that are really good, because their name is either lame or unmemorable. Examples being Silverstein and Alesana.

The only thing that can get my attention over a band name is awesome artwork. Examples:

Think about the band's name over the course of time: if the band breaks big, will its name sound like the product of its era or can it transcend the years? While it's true that we can only judge other names with the advantage of hindsight, at least we can use that hindsight to make educated guesses.

For example, The High Numbers were a band whose name made their allegiance to the mid-'60s mod scene perfectly clear. It also conveyed an air of toughness and top-doggery. But who would even care about that today? That was akin to naming your group after a meme and it had roughly the same shelf life.

Well, good thing The High Numbers changed their name back to The Who before they recorded their first LP.

Or what if The Quarrymen (a folk-sounding name if I've ever heard one) hadn't become The Beatles? If shoe-gazey Seymour hadn't become Blur? If Pen Cap Chew didn't wake up one day and realize that Nirvana was a better name?

If it's a really good name then it does, and if it's a really bad one then it does. Plenty of bands have forgettable names but are good enough to be memorable so it doesn't matter. That said, I've tried to convince a ton of people to listen to Every Time I Die only for them to tell me they sound like whiny emo wank, but that couldn't be farther from the truth [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvVq-FXp_us]. Some people are going to pidgeonhole you based on your name, but that shouldn't hold you back too much if you're any good.

For what it's worth, my favourite band names are things like Deftones- You couldn't guess what sort of music they play, and it gave them some room to change up their sound without their name sounding 'wrong'. On the other hand, look at Metallica. Metallica as an 80's thrash band? Goofy, but fine. Metallica working with Lou Reed? That's just daft.

Personally Captain Fabulous And The Rainbow Brigade is a bit too cheerful for me, but I'm a grumpy fucker. I like band names that are like that though (Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats for example. Awesome name).

I think it does matter. It should be somewhat relatable to the genre, so there's that. and somehow easy to remember. Easy stuff like Iron Maiden, Kiss, Queen etc.
Then again longer names like Five Finger Death Punch can be good too because basically that's a whole sentence, with a meaning, and the short FFDP is also a pretty easy one.
As you notice I'm into metal/rock, and the names really vary a lot. There are also names like Queensryche and Stratovarius which might not be too easy to remember if you jsut know one song from them since the name really doesn't mean anything, it's just a word.

So I'd say the name does matter. But if you already have stuff out you might not want to change the name completely, maybe just shorten it. Either Captain Fabulous, or The Fabulous Rainbow Brigade or just Rainbow Brigade. It's up to you, and I know nothing about the Funk genre so not sure what the top artists are but maybe try and form your current name along the lines of the famous or your favorite bands, but with the words in your current name.... something like that?
I even sort of like the idea of Rainbow Brigade as a band name now :/

I personally like that I can anchor the name to something. Iron Maiden is an old torture device, or then a mystical name like W.A.S.P. who no one really knows what it stands for, many say it's We Are Sexual Perverts but then again Blackie (singer) said We Ain't Sure Pal in an interview

11 syllables is just too long. Even King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is only 9 syllables, and that's way more memorable than your band name. Definitely shorten it.

It matters in some respects. If I remember correctly, Alice In Chains once was known simply as The Fucks or something along those lines and they decided it probably wouldn't help them sell in the long run with that name. I could be thinking of another band because that story is a distant memory on where/when I heard/read it.
A good band name definitely helps while a poor name hurts. Remember the acronym (and coincidentally band name as well) KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid. Simplicity in the long run is much better than a super long or obscure name. Alliteration also is a good tool. Something catchy yet simple is usually best.
One of my working project band names I think is pretty awesome but I really can't decide if it suits a more "punk" style band rather than a progressive/industrial metal band.
Some of the best bands have usually been one word names (if you don't count "the") such as:

Queen
Rush

Weezer
Primus
Ministry (ok debatable on the whole "best" thing but I love 'em anyway)

and so on.

Talent and such does count for a lot but chances are if your band name is annoyingly long, people might pass over your work just because of the name. Shallow, yes but its true.

There's nothing wrong with a light-hearted name as long as it gels with your musical style. I love your current name, but I wouldn't be expecting honest grindcore from your band. Just avoid something god-awful like Hoobastank.
