I usually don't have too much trouble, sometimes silly mistakes like missing a letter or not capitalizing the right ones. And I'm usually not too unlucky as far as needing to refresh a billion times. In fact, I've actually found that if you get a letter with an extra thing on top, like å or Ô you can just put in a normal a or O and it'll take it.
Though I do find it quite insulting that I still get captchas even though I've got nearly 4000 posts over close to three years >.>
I don't know. Maybe three or four times over the course of several hundred posts. They don't cause me much trouble. I'm about as likely to cock up a captcha as I am to make a typo when entering my password.
Usually on the first try, but lately Yahoo has been giving me some weird ones where the letters are all bundled together and look as if they form a different letter all together.
I'm not sure if you've noted, but you can type whatever you like in the other half of captcha, the only part you have to worry about is the one where the text is both white and black. I don't know what's the deal with captcha, but to me it seems like their using us as human scanners.
Very rarely. Like others have said you only need to put in the one that's covered with black and white to make it more difficult. The other one you can put whatever you want. I think it was rumoured the easy word is what they use for online "books" so if you ever see something online with the word cheese where it's not supposed to be then I apologise. Ironically, this is one of the few times I haven't needed a captcha to post.
EDIT: Turns out it's not rumour. http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore
