I currently own and regularly play a Nintendo DS, Gamecube & PS2. I don't own any newer systems than those.

Should I finally wake up, enter this decade and get a Wii, XBox360 or PS3... or even dare cross into the current "new" generation?

Games first, generation second.

Find something you like first, don't just go ahead because you feel you have to.

We can probably give you recommendations.

Should you? Uh, well... do you want to?

I mean, yeah, I'd say you're missing out on some awesome stuff, but what I consider awesome may not be what you consider awesome. If you're happy with your previous gen systems and games then good on ya.

Well just go through the PS3/360 titles and see what is to your liking, the libraries are as complete as they will ever be and fairly cheap as well, just consider that multiplayer games may not be working for more then a year longer, especially with MS/EA combo.

As for the newest consoles, most expensive, most buggy, least games,... fuck no.

Don't get a new console for the sake of "keeping up with the Joneses," get it because you're interested in the games it has to offer. If newer systems and their games don't pique your interest, then don't get them. Nothing wrong with that.

I feel like this thread is pressuring me into buying a PS2! Lived with folks for a while who had one, never owned one myself.

Hmm. Ebay. PS2, roughly £40. SNES, cuz I never had one of those either, roughly £40. Replacement/additional Wii to play my copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy, roughly £50-80. Everyone else's Christmas: gubbed.

Edit: think of the cash you'd be saving yourself if you didn't buy a newer console/s just to play catch-up. Nah, only go for it if you want to go for it and play particular games.

With those two alone you already have tremendous libraries at your disposal that could keep you busy for a decade or two. So its understandable if you don't feel a rush to buy newer gaming platforms. Now I wouldn't consider yourself "outdated" unless you do not keep up with knowing about current releases and technological evolutions in the gaming world. Your knowledge is what keeps you up to date, not your playing. That said, you certainly are missing out on some fun stuff on the Wii/PS3/360. But, who cares? That stuff will be there when you get around to it. The longer you wait generally the cheaper it will all be. (Except for the odd JRPG here and there.)

Are there games you want to play on the newer consoles? Unless you're selling your old ones to buy them, you can always go back to your older consoles as well, it's not like you have to choose one or the other.

I'd say the same thing about the new gen, but with the lack of games they're much less appealing.

There are so many good Gen7 games that unless you really can't find 'em, you should.

The 8th gen is dodgier, because it's new.

You should get a gaming PC. Most of the games worth playing from the PS3/Xbox 360 era are on the PC as well. They are usually better than the console version, and you get to play PC exclusives. Most of those games are cheap now, but there's a slight difference. You'd probably have to buy some used games for a console to save money, but on PC you buy new games digitally, and they're even cheaper. And if you really want a console, the PS3 has better exclusives than the Xbox 360 in my humble opinion.

Now's definitely a good time to jump in on the 360/PS3/Wii. There's a huge back-catalog of titles, and many of them can be obtained cheaply.

That being said, if you haven't exhausted all the possibilities on the PS2 / DS, then go right ahead and do so. Both of those platforms are chock-full of great games. In particular, they are RPG powerhouses, which is something you can't really say about the Wii/PS3/360, unless you're more of a Western RPG fan.

For the record, I've been the 7th gen for a while, and I've enjoyed a ton of stuff there. I wouldn't touch the new consoles with a ten-foot pole, though. Too expensive, not enough stuff out for them, and so on. The only one I'll probably bite on soon-ish is the Wii U.

You CAN, you sure as chuck don't have too. Unless you've played all the good games there is for the PS2, in which case you go on the escapist, start a PS2 appreciation thread, and get a couple of good tips.

Hey don't feel too bad OP. Yes I do own a Wii, but outside of Smash Brothers I don't much in the way of games for it. I borrowed and played a few of a friend's GC games on it, and used the VC to get Bomberman 95, Earthworm Jim, Super Mario World and Super Metroid. ,Other than that I don't have anything "newish" I have an original x-box, my computer (from 2005) and a Game Boy Advance. But I am really thinking about either upgrading my machine or just getting a new one so I can play some of the good games from generation 7.

Practically all of the games I play are on the SNES or on the DS, but I also play the occasional PS3 game (like The Last of Us). I think that there are quality games for just about every generation of games, and that if you are happy with the selection of your current consoles, you don't NEED to. I mean, look at how absolutely humongous the PS2's library was. You couldn't play that many games in your whole life! Do you care about online multiplayer? If so, grab a PS3 or XBOX 360. If it doesn't you can probably safely stick to those consoles. It's also much cheaper!

If you're happy with the games that your current system can play, I'd say you're laughing all the way to the bank already. It doesn't hurt to keep saving up money in case you ever do want a gaming PC, but for now it sounds like you're pretty much set.

Still own a ps2, with an a/v cord upgrade so it doesn't look so wonky on my hdtv, have a small library of the better games for it. So owning a PS2 is NOT a bad thing, nor would I say not owning an updated console makes you outdated. Also DS is pretty awesome too. But if you're feeling left out by not owning a PS3 or other systems, I'd recommend staying away from the newest generation as the games aren't really good enough to buy one for. I'd buy the last gen (PS3/360) if you do find things that make you feel you gotta have it. Or even a Wii if you're feeling Nintendo. I own a couple Wii's because I found really good deals on them and wanted to play some of the Zelda titles and other 1st party games.

Glad I'm not the only one, I'm in exactly the same boat.
