I know that it's been quite a long time for the hype of spore to have washed over, but I was just watching the ZP review for it and I realized how it could have been something really cool.
It would have actually been really awesome if Spore played out as a game similar to Civilization, where you tried to play around and direct a larger group of "people" rather than a single being in the cell, creature and space stages. While it probably would have lost a lot of kiddy appeal, it would have added much more realism and strategy to the game, where you'd have to expand your creature throughout the world and adapt to new climates and predators. When you go towards the civilization stage, your creatures take over as a semi-AI and you have to guide them towards global unity. When you get to the space stage, it's more of a deal of managing all your space colonies and planets from an government/civilization point of view, not as an interstellar merchant bleeding your colonies for resources.
I realize some people may have liked spore, but what're your thoughts on the game being more like this? I personally disliked the game, so I'd like to think about how the cool concept could be improved.
