how to alter a map in minecraft?

is there any way besides "manual labor" to get a large flat area in minecraft? i just want to see what i can build and it gets extremly boring just flattening land out.

Mods usually work for this. You can find plenty of them.

Or you can run around beating dirt with a shovel for a few hours.

Are you sure you're playing the right game then?

My suggestion is the just walk around the map until you find a good patch of flat ground to use.
