Fellow Escapists, i have a problem, a huge problem.

I've been on this website for many years now, but it's suddenly dawned on me that I'm not a good poster at all.

Everything i type in various non gaming related topics, due to my huge lack of knowledge in the subject matter, it causes me to make rather offensive, and ignorant posts for no reason whatsoever.

One example of this, is that i didn't read a topic properly about two youths getting shot by the man who they were mugging.

I then typed in the topic saying that the man should of pistol whipped them rather than kill them, of course he was too badly beaten up to even try to attempt that sort of thing, so cue comments like "you've watched too many movies".

I really don't know what causes me to post these comments, it just feels like a instant reaction to me, and i can't seem to shake it off.

So i would like your help escapist, what makes a good poster, is their any tips you can give me, can you relate to me somewhat, should i just keep to the subjects i know about, please let me know.

Igorance is ok. Its a sign of more room to learn with.

Emotion is really hard to translate into text. Using the colour syntax (color because this site is American) can get around this.

Well of course one way to improve is to always make sure you read before posting. And thinking before speaking typing.

I always read the post fully, and read at least the first page, to see what other people have said, (after all, it is a discussion.) I always read through what I've written using the preview button, this also helps me to make sure videos are embedded properly. Just remember that other peoples opinions matter too, and you may not always be right.

Leave the jingoism at the door. In light of the post that got you on probation. Look over your post before hitting the big button; Captcha may help with this process.

Read the OP's post fully, and make sure you understand it before you reply. I'v failed on this on several occasions myself.
Also, if the topic is a link; Make sure you have read/watched the entire thing before you comment.

That's my main problem, i can't think before i type.

I just can't seem to reconsider what would happen if i type this, and how people would react to it.

It's making me rather worried, because as a poster on this site, the thing that i want the least is to offend someone.

Experience is really all it is.

And there's more to threads than just debates...At least I hope that's how it is here. I haven't really seen many 'joke' threads.

-Frown- You can't put yourself in a similar persons shoes, at all?
Or you simple THINK that you can't. Because if it's the first option, then yes, you should be worried, because it's one of the very clear signs of a psychopath.
However, since this is the internet, I seriously doubt it is this option. You just need to take a moment, breath in, and consider the consequences.

They key to being a better poster is to actually read, absorb, think and then reply. Don't just read the thread title and first paragraph and respond. You need time, not much, but you still need time to come to a good theory. Also another problem with replying to something about someone getting shot or cops doing this, or soldiers doing that is that we are all sitting behind a computer being desk chair quarterback with all the time and none of the pressure involved in the decision that was made.

"If I was getting mugged, I would have just pistol whipped the hooligans." Pistol whipping isn't going to work on a 2 on 1 unless the one is bigger, faster, more aggressive or actually skilled. So when you stop and think for even a second, you realize your knee jerk response is flippant.

I take it that scince you come here you are a gamer in some way like all of us. Gamers have to think in order to play a game, i know of no game that can be reliably played entirely through reflexes.

I just can't seem to reconsider what would happen if i type this, and how people would react to it.
Peoples opinions are just that on the internet. Nothing i or anyone else can or will say will force you to eat shit and say it tastes like chicken, for example.

It's making me rather worried, because as a poster on this site, the thing that i want the least is to offend someone.
People take offence to diffent things. Even things that are moderately civil. Sometimes stupid or ignorant comments lead on to a good discussion. As long as one side doesnt purposely escalate to flamewar.

Also contrary to popular belief, not everyone else on the internet is a homocidal maniac who can track you down through Facebook.

As long as you dont step over the forum rules you wont be banned, and thats what we all try to avoid in the end.

Ha. There, see? I'm learning, and so can you.

Is that an Internet Rule? It should be.

a good way to become good is to always re-read the post your about to post. also you can usually catch spelling mistakes I know I do.
also knowing what the actual original post is asking or telling.
another thing to remember is that sarcasm is not always seen by other members I am very sarcastic and have had people say wtf to me because they did not see the sarcastic maner that I was believed I was presenting.

Sometimes, not replying is the best thing you can do. Take my example. If you don't have enough information about the subject matter to make an assessment leave it be. If you are truly interested in the topic and want to respond, take the time to do a little research and come back to it.

Stick around as long as I have and you'll find that a lot of threads repeat themselves and you'll go years without posting anything new.

Always check your posts, read at least the first page if it is religion and politics or advice, preview your post if it is using any coding, understand the topic and think about the scenario if it is one of those kinda threads with real discussion.

And kudos on admitting this, I was similar at first, but I grew out of it hassle free.

Read the Thread! I hate to see the same post twenty-quadrillion times because the people are too lazy to read more than 5 lines. If its to much for you, leave it be. You cant participate in a discussion without knowing how the discussion went so far.

At least read the complete OP carefully including the linked sources. If you dont know what the OP is talking about you can't ever post something useful or intelligent in the discussion.

If you arent sure about something, it may be better to remain silent then to convince everybody that you dont know what you are talking about.

Before posting, read through your post again at least once. Check for embarrassing mistakes or if it is comprehensible what you really want to say.
