Ok, this is an experiment. I want to see what you guys think makes a successful post, one that gets loads of replies and views. Say what makes you go to a forum post, which polls you like, and I'll read through, using the ideas to create a forum post and see how many escapist comments it gets. It can use anything, including polls.

Worst / Best / Under rated usually do quite well.

Something that will create a lot of replys. Something like "post your character designs here" or anything similar.

If you're rating "good" purely on numbers, then probably a thread that annoys people, but not enough to be labelled trollish/fanboy rantish/-ist of some type; and therefore locked. Controversy is attractive, everybody wants to argue in order to defend whatever it is they like.

If you mean a thread that is actually good, then something that provokes discussion and thought about something that alot of people are interested in. So here, that'd be games. Of course, add in some humour for seasoning and you've got yourself a winner.

It must ask people about themselves or there opinion.

People like talking about themselves and what they think.

There is a diffrence between a good topic and a popular one in my eyes.

A good topic has to be intellgent, have something worth discussing and if anything it should be well written.

But I've seen "Popular" threads get far more replies then good threads simply because they could be controversal. A thread about how much you hate Jack Thompson is gonna get a lot more replies then a good thread.

You gotta be in Forum Games for loads of views and replies.

Otherwise, hit topics seem mostly random.

Unfortunately, topics with sensitive issues get stretched to breaking point. Anything about A is better than B descends into flames, especially religion, politics or gender.

However...artful topics or whinge topics also do well. See Pimpmygun or TheCustomerIsAlwaysWrong.

In between those, a good RP thread can often last a lifetime.

BUT..it's often luck, some brilliant threads I've seen in the past have just died due to when they were released.

What he said.

Though a good way to increase your chances of getting hits is to make a fun topic that provokes thought, memories, or enjoyment.
Also, personally, when the OP is polite and kind, it makes me want to post in it more.
