It really depends on how im feeling at any given time. Sometimes it is nice to lose myself in a game for a 100 hours, but then after that, I cannot stand the thought of another one. Usually, I will go from a long, open-world game, then through 2 or 3 shorter, linear games, then repeat the cycle. It is also important to play games that are vastly different from each other - just to pace things out a little. Just played a shooter? Try an RTS or spectacle fighter.
So far, this year, I have played -
Destiny 2 - Plus all of the DLC
God of War
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Donut County
Batman: Arkham City
Into the Breach
Batman: Arkham Origins
Batman: Arkham Knight
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
Halo: Spartan Strike
Homefront
Now im in the middle of Red Dead Redemption 2, and this game is long.
Trying to get through my backlog, you see - I've been adding to it and adding to it over the years, but I never end up playing the games that I buy. Maybe spending all of 2017 playing basically nothing but Heroes of the Storm was not a great idea.
Here is my whole backlog, if anyone cares:
