I recommend starting with either TOS or TNG, because they seem to be the big dogs of the bunch, most likely with good reason.

You could always start of with the new film and go from there.

Although you'll have to put up with J.J. Abrams horrible lighting.

For series, you could always start from the beginning. With Spock and Shatner!

Watch the new movie. It's awesome. I did love it but I'm not interested in watching the TV show, I'll happily wait for the sequel.

You know it's set for 2012, right?

Not only is The Next Generation the only Star Trek series I can tolerate, it is the only one I thoroughly enjoy. Watch that.

The original series might not do it for you. It's ridiculously cheesy.

TNG is the crown jewel of the Star Trek universe. It's has Patrick-Motherfucking-Stewart. The early episodes look really dated, but they're still entertaining. The series has a few episodes that are truly masterpieces. "The Inner Light" is probably the best Star Trek episode (of any series) ever.

DS9 started slow. But towards the end there was a big, continuous story. It was actually pretty deep. In a way it had more in common with Lord of the Rings than regular Star Trek. I didn't watch it religiously, but it got epic (only word to use). The heavy use of Cardasians was good because they're a neat race.

Voyager sucked.

Didn't watch Enterprise.

The original movies are brilliant (except for 5)

TNG is the best starting point, but it doesn't hit its stride til season 3.

DS9 is great, but requires a greater undeerstanding of the universe to really "get"

The only way, sart with the Original series and move your way up. But if you're not into the TV series the movies are also very excellent.

No don't go with the the new movie, it has nothing to do with the last ones except for some names.

The original series is cheesy, but it's the original series, it's the best place to start. Careful with the old movies; as Tim says on 'Spaced', "every odd-numbered Star Trek movie is shit" (ironic given that Simon Pegg's in the 11th movie, which rocked). TNG is also really great. Not a huge fan of the other series or movies, though.

Yeah, i would too start with "The Next Generation". But the series started out a bit slow. First season isn't really as good as later ones. The turning point was Rikers mighty beard (named this Trope: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GrowingTheBeard )

I would watch parallel to that the original. Those both will boost your interest, you now want to watch DS9 (also the movies; some are REALLY good). After that you need more, but Voyager is a bit weaker. Enterprise started out ok, but then this boring one-season arc came... then it got a bit better... then it was cancelled.

Also if you liked DS9, you may want to look into Babylon 5 too. Have fun.

It's not so much that you need a greater understanding if the universe ti get DS9, it's more that until season 4 there really wasn't a lot of trekking. And a lot of people were turned off by the idea of Star "Sit on a space station for 3 seasons".

That said, I enjoyed DS9. Only Trek I dislike is Enterprise.

Okay, well I would personally recommend starting with TMP movies. The first 6 movies are a mix of really amazing, to fairly crappy. Overall I did enjoy them all. I'd then move on to TNG, DS9, VOY, and any of the TNG based movies at any time.

I do suggest watching TNG before watching the TNG based movies if you truly want to "get" everything. If you want to watch The Original Series you can do so, but remember it's quite campy and cheesy. It is quite good for a few laughs though.

I think most people here seem to agree that TNG is a good starting point, especially if you have a low tolerance for campness.
TNG is definitely the better acted and scripted show, but it can get a bit stale. You get to like the characters out of sheer exposure to them but no one except for Data has any real animus or struggle (though Patrick Stewart is totally credible as an everyday leader, unlike that a-hole Kirk- seriously, it's like he enjoys putting people in danger!).

But if you prefer deeper more-well developed characters then DS9 is the only way to go, right from the start it tries to tackle some properly heavy issues (holocaust anyone?). And this is just me but I personally like the cast better than any other trek, especially Colm Meaney as O'Brien who is a perfect example of a character that you can totally empathise with. Something missing from all the other series in my opinion. AND as mentioned above it really benefits from having a single show-spanning arc that starts right from the first episode and doesn't get wrapped up till the very last show.

and lets be honest. the only reason anyone watched the later seasons of voyager was Seven of Nine and her magical array of spandex jumpsuits. ;)

i did watch the latest movie but didn't like it... many say that star trek is supposed to be smarter and more politically driven.. the show just seemed very shallow to me though..thats just my opinion...

so i see that i should start with tng and then ds9...my friend just lend me his whole voyageur series any reason i should or should not watch that?

I'm no star trek nerd, but it's the only way to go.
I second to this. The Next Generation is the best one. Although the very first episodes can seem a bit slow and uninspired, it does pick up significantly later on.
