How To Keep Yourself Entertained For 8 Hours

At the start of March I'm going to New York, for starters I'm a nervous flier so the 8 hour flight is a little offputting, but it's probably the only time I'll have the chance to go to New York so I put that aside.

The longest flight I've ever been on was 4 hours and I was so incredibly bored, so 8 hours is gonna be fun -.-'

So, my question is: How do you keep yourself entertained on a long haul flight? I sure as hell need some advice and tips for entertaining myself for so long.

Edit: While I'm asking about this I remembered something else. This may sound stupid but I don't know so I'm asking. Would I be correct in thinking that if I buy games in the US they won't work on my xbox back in the UK?
I've never heard anyone say they won't but at the same time I've never heard anyone say they will.

Get yourself a portable DVD player a complete box set of your favorite show or a couple of movies.

If that doesn't work, just buy some really potent sleeping pills. It assures you won't be tired when you get off the plane.

Must...must....re....resi...failing...GRABBIN' SOME PEELZ!!!

I feel dirty now...

But I approve of your DVD player suggestion. If you can, get a laptop with you, play some games ánd watch some DVD's. Also books, I could finish 2 Dresden Files novels in that time.

I'm planning on making a 24 hour flight in the (near) future. Thát'll be fun, I'll definitely grab some peelz for that. I couldn't sleep in a plane, or any crowded place, without medication anyway.

Susan Arendt told me to get a DS and a copy of Peggle and the Professor Layton games for my flight to China in October.
Try that.

This is good advice. Or you can use your laptop instead of a portable dvd player.

Some flights provide internet access on long flights and I'm pretty sure you can spend 8 hours on the internet without getting bored.

Sketchbook+MP3 player.

Or a really good book, also sleep. Sleeping is the best thing to do on a plane.

I try read for long flights, once I get sucked into a book time flies. That or ipod and close my eyes and just zone out.

I once took my Gameboy Advance on a long flight and forgot to charge it before I left...that sucked, especially as I got a new game JUST for the flight to keep me entertained.

As a person who does a lot of 8 hour flights my best advice is sleep. It really is the best thing, your legs can easily cramp up from being in a seat for that many hours and most electronic equipment's batteries crap out way before those 8 hours are up. There is no worse feeling than having your stuff die halfway through and then going...well now I having nothing to do. Reading is always hit and miss because the times they ask people to close their windows and turn off the lights is a bit random. Once I had a flight at noon and they did "sleep time" at 2:30 pm; I was like wtf 0.o? And yes you can always turn on those little lights but there will always be some person who actually sleeps during this time and the stewardess will come along and ask you to turn it off.

What you need is a monkey, a tub of lube, 2 ft of rope, a comb, and a slim-jim.

Probably can't get a tub of lube on a plane, drat.

A book is fine. If there's a bookstore near you pick up one or two for a couple of dollars. I suggest Dune or Gorge Orwell's 1984.

Read books, listen to music, watch dvds, do voice overs for other people talking on the flight or go to sleep.

DS + Pokémon = win!

For me anyway.

I'd recommend movies, music, books and addictive DS games (or the portable console of your choice). The combination of these will certainly keep you entertained for the eight hour flight.

Alternatively, if there are games you want for a portable system you wanted but haven't gotten/played yet, going and getting one or two of them is usually a good idea. I suggest more than one, since it'll let you swap out for another game if you get bored of one. For a period of time like 8 hours, just having one thing to do usually won't work out too well.

An iPod or an MP3 player with a good selection of music can help as well.

Books are a good idea too if you're the reading type.

I can get a bottle of lube on the plane if its in a 100ml bottle and in a clear plastic bag, I'd get some funny looks though. Dare I ask what I'm supposed to do when I've got all of those objects onto a plane?

Fall asleep, on a flight with my friends? I'd wake up with a hitler moustache and get thrown out of the country before leaving the airport.

In all seriousness though, that's not a bad idea at all.

Use your imagination, going into detail may not be the best idea. I don't know about you but I can have a grand ol' time with said things on a long flight.
And your friends could join in, ahhh.

Longest flight I've been on (frequently, I do it a lot), is about... 11 hours? meh.

What I would do is get a decent flight (if possible) - good airliners like Virgin Airlines have good services like basic videogames on them, if you can afford it. AVOID Easy Jet and similar airliners! Not only are they boring but they will kill your spine on such a long journey. If your not choosing the airliner, then fair enough, theres nothing you can do about it.

Have VARIETY - take books, computer, iPod/MP3 Player, magazines, as many things as you can - if you get bored of one thing switch to another. Sweets also help.

If all else fails, sleep - it'll make sure that the journey ends quicker, and mucking up your sleep system doesn't really matter on such a long flight cause you will be jet-lagged at the destination anyways.

Have fun, and enjoy the flight! :)
