My fellow escapers, i am in a bit of a predicament,
My home internet is currently out, due to lazy tree-cutters, and I want to get on steam. he problem is, whenever i try to get on, it tries to update. even when i pick the option to go to offline mode, it says it can't connect to the internet, and when i bring it up again, it tries to update. Please help me turn off steam updates without actually going on to steam.

Steam game updates? Just go to downloads and pause them. (I did that with TF2 after the weekly 100mb hat-updates, but after a while it just updated anyway)

Steam application updates? It should just try to update when connected to the net; if there's no connection, it won't bother. If the update is already downloaded, it'll auto update when the application is restarted. If it's trying to update without an internet connection, there must be some kind of issue. Maybe delete the clientregistry.blob in your Valve folder.

There are Steam forums for this sort of thing you know. I don't know what to tell you, when I boot up my PC if I'm not connected to the net Steam always lets me go offline.

Hit the pause button. Seriously, the only time I've had problems with downloading when I don't want to was with a 7mb TF2 patch which finished in seconds.

Edit: Oh application updates... hmm it shouldn't try to update if you're offline. I recommend the SPUF.

If you're new to the whole thing, it goes to 'update' when you're offline. Just wait, don't hit cancel, nothing. A menu will pop up, hit 'start in offline mode' and boom. Done.

Edit: If you're talking about applying the update, I just hit cancel and play as normal when I was offline. It would try to update every time I opened steam offline (having downloaded the client, just not applied it) but it didn't stop me from using steam.

Also, I lol @ somebody trying to make claims about what steam is when they 'haven't used it for years'.

Nope, there is no way. We are all sucking the corporate jimmy. All those precious games are distant memories as long as your internet is down and Steam wants to update pre-login.

This is why I have been boycotting all Steam distributed products and boxed games that use Steam DRM for the past years.
I am basically doing the same thing.I was pissed when I got Civ 5 then found out I needed Steam to play it, if I knew what would happen I never would have bought it but this is another good reason to avoid steam downloaded games
