how will it end?

The most likely thing is an asteriod at this point. I think the one heading here for 2020 is expected to pass very close to our gravitational pull. Either that or I think I heard somewhere that the main current in the sea is in danger of slowing down or possibly stopping and if that happens the world is pretty much screwed.

Giant, sentient dinosaurs with a fascination of British culture from the future will go back in time to enslave mankind, making us their servants, with those who refuse to serve them becoming snacks.

What? I never said it was based on cold, hard science. This is all speculation

I suppose that all depends on what it is that's supposed to be ending. The earth is too large to be taken out by anything currently residing in the solar system that isn't in a stable orbit, so it will probably be around until the sun explodes. Life will live here until it absolutely can't, which will probably be until the sun explodes. We will live here until there is a vastly superior alternative or we destroy ourselves, as it is relatively unlikely that a population wipe-out event will occur before we gain the ability to leave earth, let alone prevent the event. People may live on forever, or for simply a day. Our existence lies on very unstable ground. There really is too little information to make a valuable estimate, despite what all you misanthropes here are going to assume.

Collision with the Andromeda Galaxy will eventually end it all. That's a pretty amazing thought really. I mean you often think of extinction-level events like asteroids or even the sun turning into a red giant and burning out. But a whole galaxy is approaching is at just over 100 kilometres per second and even then given the unimaginably huge distance of space it still means it'll take 4.5 billion years to get here. Imagine, as unlikely as it seems, if humans were to last so long as to see and/or experience it. Even if we gained the technology for interplanetary travel or even inter-stellar travel we'd still most likely be majorly fucked on an indescribable scale.

Space is pretty neat.
Wow, I just had to say that, if this is really true, you just blew my mind.

Of course, it's one in the morning and my mind is pretty fragile at the best of times, so not that big of an accomplishment.
But still... Wow...

I really hope there's a heaven or hell, cause I want to watch this. I mean, yes, tragedy and all that, but watching two galaxies literally colliding... I don't want to miss that!

A tentacle like nightmare space god will eat our planet like an apple! It's 100 times the size of earth!

Heat death of the universe. To paraphrase the first and second laws of thermodynamics, you can't win, and you can't break even. And so eventually all you have is a soup of slightly above 0K radiation, and nothing is able to move or do anything. Cheery thought, no?

I foresee the apocalypse will follow shortly after a crazy man in clown make-up rearranges three magical statues known as the Warring Triad.

It's more likely than anything else that we'll be wiped out from an entirely unforeseeable and unpreventable like a surge of cosmic radiation before we get around to blowing each other up or creating zombies.

Somehow someone will figure out how to make the world of the internet come to life in reality. And we will all die.

No, this isn't the apocalypse I want.

While that is an inevitable, our sun will actually increase temperature range through expansion caused by helium and hydrogen consumption in about 1 billion years. It's great that us and Andromeda are going to duke it out, but it sucks that we'll be too damned melted by then to notice.

Wow. Props for the Naked Rei Ayanami performing Instrumentality as your Apocalypse of choice.

OT: First off - I don't think it's going to happen. Society might collapse once or twice, but nothing major - humans are too stubborn to die out.

Instead, I think we'll live... we'll spread out into the galaxy, and genome separation will cause us to evolve into various parallel species. Homo-sapiens will no longer exist, but some new form of humanity will evolve out of us - probably more than one.

That or someone will find the Zohar and we'll all turn into Gnosis. And then Mary Magdalene, the combat android, will return us all to Earth, spend 10,000 years being reincarnated over and over again, and then pilot giant mechs to kill the fleshy body of god and release the spirit of god (UDO) back to it's proper existence in the parallel universe based on the square root of 1.

Cookie for anyone who can name where both of my theories come from. ^^

Wouldn't Snu Snu just get rid of the men? I've been reading about scientists now using DNA from lesbian partners as quasi-sperm to impregnate the other's egg. Seeing as sperm is just a carrying device for DNA, the process of replacing it with another carrier for the stuff is relatively easy (on the scale of human ability). It's not here yet, but given another, say, ten years, this form of reproduction could well leave men without a job, lol.
