No one is crazy enough to use nukes, and more so we've got so many countermeasures against them that anyone who did use a nuke would never have it reach it's target.Amphoteric said:

As for the sun dying, we've got a billion years before the sun expands to a size that would render Earth uninhabitable. At that point we've either moved to another system, or we would not longer be classifiable as homo sapiens sapiens (not a typo).
I think that asteroid collision is the most likely. Earth has already been majorly hit once, and there are a lot of things that are traveling around space. Many of those things aren't much of a threat (we get get hit by minor stuff all the time and it's got no effect) but there are a few that would be near impossible to destroy or deflect, and if one of those is in line for a strike, then we're screwed.....

I did a little research about this, and where I live is almost constantly downwind from Yellowstone, which means the majority of ash blasted up from the volcano will be headed in my direction.Lord Kloo said:

At the rate we're going my best guess is if something doesn't happen to stop it, this population thing will run out of control and most of the world will end up starving to death

The chav population will flow across the world and drum out everything else. At this point, "humanity" will no longer exist.
I think in the effort to maintain each countries resources (after exhausted every other option) will nuke each other for resources, thus killing most of the population and similar to fallout we lose all records of before this war, so we are completely oblivious when the sun, the asteroid Stephen Hawkins spoke of or the Andromeda Galaxy crashing into ours.
That or we augment and enhance ourselves untill we are almost 100% android - which gives us an almost unlimited brain capacity to find a way to survive, and "Tom Roberts" if we are sentient, thinking after this process then aren't we still alive?
Or option 3) Like in the Mass Effect universe history - after discovering space travel we encounter aliens (Turians in Mass Effect at the Shanxi relay) which start a war with us (and instead of an alien council intervening we are wiped out).
That or we augment and enhance ourselves untill we are almost 100% android - which gives us an almost unlimited brain capacity to find a way to survive, and "Tom Roberts" if we are sentient, thinking after this process then aren't we still alive?

humanity will evolve in technology and morality, expanding toward the stars in a society which is the paradigm of humanitarianism. if/when we will meet inteligent aliens we will combine our knowledge and morals, creating a greater society, with a possiblity of hybriding our races (which will indeed end the current human race).

If people like greenpeace didn't flip out over nuclear power we'd be good for at least a few more decades, allowing more time to come up with a proper sustainable energy source. Heck, there are billions of humans out there, why not rig up massive hamster wheel like generators and we walk in them to create power? Would help combat obesity too...
Asteroids and solar flares are the only foreseeable natural events that could severely screw us over. Australia would especially be screwed from a solar flare due to the weakened ozone layer sitting over it. A pretty huge bad ass asteroid would have to be absolutely huge to wipe out all life. Anything that huge would be traveling that much slower and would hopefully be diverted due to gravity from the other planets in our solar system, or be partially blocked by the moon. Although that would cause a heck load of other problems.

Hopefully we'd have the intelligence to only attempt this on a realistic scale in a controlled environment. Creating a ATP inhibitor would be plain silly and devastating for all life everywhere. Let's hope our scientists behave themselves.
Don't know much about these guys, but presumably they would struggle to adapt to other environments.
It was a very reasonable list and I can understand the reasoning behind most of them, they just don't stand up to scrutiny. I'll look more into those micro-organisms that nasa found.
I don't think it'll be war. i mean, even if we nuke each other... i'm pretty sure noone considers the eskimo's a high priority target... there will always be out-of-the-way spots where people will survive. disease seems more likely, but even them, some people will probably be resistant to it. aliens are too far away (although they ARE real), so I guess an asteroid impact is the biggest threat to the human race.... talk about astronomical odds.... the sun dying will take too long, like millions of years. we'll have colonized other solar systems by then.
The human race will accidentally destroy itself when scientists learn how to harness anti-matter and some idiot decides to test a bomb on THE SAME PLANET as the one we live on.
