Gaming Genre?s need to be changed
As gaming has evolved genres have evolved with it, we have reached a point that requires a revamped proses for organizing games.
Allow to explain via example.
Let?s look at the dedicated multiplayer games first.
-Counter Strike 1.6/S/GO
-Day Of defeat 1.4/S
-War of the Roses
-Team Fortress 1 / 2
So these games could be viewed loosely as shooters or RPG?s. but in truth these games represent their own genre. Dedicated multiplayer games. With sub classifications of first person shooter/Rpg. You could also call them MMO?s but I think that would not work. MMO?s have the sigma?s of having persistent worlds. Such as:
-World of Warcraft
-Guild Wars 1 / 2
-Planet Side 1 / 2
But this is not about what to name the new genre?s only to recognize that they are needed. The point im making above is that we should distinguish the two genres since they are both very difference with only surface similarities. There are also the Co-op, being defined as ?games that are designed to be played with others? games they have strong similarities with other genre?s but can in fact be put in their own. So let?s look at a few:
-Left for Dead 1 / 2
-Killing Floor
-Magica
-Castle Crashers
-Dungeon Defenders
So these are all co-op games, they are meant to played with others but you don?t have too. Do I really need to explain why this kinda hurts the brain.
Now to look at the RPG?s; this is again a loose genre that involves game that are very different with each other in how they work and play. The key ones being are they RPG?s in that you can evolve your character, aka:
-Neverwinter Nights 1 / 2
-Fable (series)
-Elder Scrolls Series
-Mount and Blade
Or by whether the game is open world or not, all the above are open world. but if you include open world as a genre you can include:
-STALKER (series)
-Red Faction Gerrila
-GTA (series)
-Space Pirates and Zombies
-Spore
Now many people would consider STALKER to be a Shooter/RPG. Not because you can evolve your character, but because you can choose what you do in an open world.
Then there is the most annoying genre of all action/adventure: this is a loose term for games like:
-Prince of Persia (Sands of Time, Warrior Within, Two Thrones)
-Darksiders 1 / 2
-Uncharted (series)
The biggest problem with this genre is that it only encompasses how the game world is designed to be moved in and how it progresses. Not how you interact with it. We have 3 different kinds of games above, a story based adventure with lots of action, puzzles and platforming. A melee combat based action game with adventuring. And a story based third person shooter with adventuring.
So are these all these games in the same genre?
Now for the shooters? ah the shooters, another loose genre. A shooter is any game that you primarily shoot weapons with a minimal focus on melee if there is any. That is the best definition I can give this genre since it defies most others. So would you consider these games related?
-Mass Effect 2 / 3
-Call of Duty (Series)
-Farcry 3
-Doom 3
-Borderlands 1 / 2
-Gears of War (Series)
Now before everyone starts typing ?Mass effect is an RPG you don?t know what you?re talking about!!? I would agree, only with Mass effect 1, but that is a different argument, I am simply including it to make a point about loose definitions. Each of the games above are very different games, that not everyone will like. But chances are if you like shooters you probably like at least one of the above. Borderlands 1 / 2 and Farcry 3 are in my mind Open World, RPG, shooters.
Where Doom 3 and Call of Duty are Closed world FPS?s. And Mass effect 2 / 3 and Gears of War are third person shooters the first being a (bad) RPG with a focus on story. The second being an action adventure game.
I could give a few hundred examples but I think I made my point.
So what do you guys think should be done about these currently useless classifications?
Because personally I think it should be fixed but I?m at a loss how.
