Like a Russian mail-order bride: she looked stunning in all the pictures, but in person she's a boring, annoying, ugly tart.
Funny comment aside. How is it boring? It seemed almost like a strange version of Team Fortress.
I generally buy games for single-player, I don't give a rat's ass about multiplayer. What I got was an endless sequence of bot-shooting scenarios, like a prolonged tutorial for a Battlefield game. For a game that based its marketing on how unique it was among shooters, it's one of the blandest experiences I've played in the last year.
If you don't give a 'rats ass' about multiplayer why would you buy a game that was designed to be multiplayer focussed?
What shooter these days isn't multiplayer focused? But there's a vast difference between not having single player (and hence, I'll know to avoid it unless it's a Battlefield game), and pretending to have one when in fact it's just a bait-&-switch.
But Brink was never marketted as single player game like other multiplayer focussed games. Yeah it has a 'story' but the developers always said that the single player would just be the multipayer maps but with bots. It was never designed to stand on it's single player merits.
We must've read vastly different previews, since I never knew about the ghastly "campaign" until I actually played the thing.
But even if the campaign was indeed a story-driven affair with linear levels, the gameplay itself is, well... boring. There's nothing to separate this game from, say, Bulletstorm, another recent "look-at-me-i'm-so-different-oh-wait-no-I'm-not" shooter. Except of course, at least Bulletstorm had a story and handled well. For a game that emphasizes free-flow movement so proeminently, the controls feel stiff and unresponsive, especially when you're trying to do parkour all over the place.
The bottom line is, the game's just not very good. After the disapointment of Bulletstorm, I was rellying on Brink to save the day, but it ended up being even worse! Ah well... money poorly spent.
