The year is coming to an end! I am preparing to fill myself full with delicious food and become instantly nauseous and puke just as we speak. Christmas is near, and after Christmas comes next year. And then comes more games!

But sadly, it seems like the game-market is standing completely still at the moment. I can't recollect any new releases that are coming out this month that I actually care about. The Saboteur is out of course, but I'm not really interested in it, and I don't think it will be a good contestant for GotY anyway. If I am proven wrong, I will humbly eat my own ninja-socks.

I have enjoyed this year, at least from a gaming standpoint. Many solid titles have come out, and I have taken it upon myself to do a short article about what game I think is GotY! This should be allowed, since it is my choice and therefore completely original (unless someone has stolen my identity and posted a thread just like this... I have to look into that)

Now, most of you are probably having four different games in mind. Assassin's Creed 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2. If you didn't have those in mind: Why not? They are all strong contestants! Or, at least three of them are... I know some people who would very much like to see MW2 nailed to a cross.

But sadly, none of them are worthy of the title HUBILUB's GotY . No, only a very special game deserves that title. A game that I hold very dear to my heart.

The game that I am talking about is of course...

What a twist!

Some of you might already know that I am a fan of the Beatles. Therefore, this game is very dear to me. Not only did it revive the passion I have for the band, but it also gave me a very satisfying experience. Plus, this was the first Rockband-game I scored 100% on Expert.

If you're not a fan of the Beatles, you probably won't share my passion for it, but I hope that you all understand where I am coming from with this: I see this as game that made my favorite band of all time justice, and satisfied me as both a gamer and a fan. I've owned this game ever since it was released, and I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Now if you excuse me, I have a three-way solo to nail on Expert.

Not a tiny little one? Not a tiny little bit?

Oh well, it's your opinion and I respect it (though I don't understand it...)

My game of the year is either ArmA II or Hearts of Iron III.
But I can understand why you'd like the Beatles:RB. It is a pretty good game.
I am ashamed to say that I have never ever heard of those games before.

Should I be ashamed?

I don't know what to call Game of the Year. Most of my favourite games were from last year.
And alot of the bigger games have come out near Christmas.

Dragon age, Modern warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and maybe Mass Effect 2

i dunno.

i tried re 4 for the first time this year. i saw it as a difficult version of re 5 which i played first at my friends place.

and much more single-player fun.

but it probably doesn't count, not exactly being brought out this year.

ArmA II is a shooter-Simulation type game. It's probably the closest you could actually get to being in a war on game. It's so realistic the US and UK armies use a version of it called VBS2 to train their soldiers. It's very moddable and has a kick arse editor that you can use to create great missions. It's very intense and fun, you just need a really good PC to play it though.
It's also GODDAMN BASTARD DIE hard. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on Master? No challenge. ArmA II, even on easy? OH GOD SAVE ME NOW! I DIDN'T EVEN SEE THE ENEMY OH GOD ARGH. Yeah, it's hard.

Nah, they're pretty nerdish games.

Hearts of Iron III isn't as intense, but its very deep. It's a bit like a much deeper Risk. You view a map of the world, manage your economy and fight wars, you can play as any country that existed between 1936 and 1948. The game is played in real time and can suck you in for hours on end. Great game, but once again, pretty hard on the processor.
Seems awesome. However, I don't have a gaming PC, and even if they would be on a console, I don't think I would be doing the game justice by playing it on that. Not the same experience.

the games i played this year were mass effect, fallout 3, bioshock, fable II, FiFA 09 and morrowind. all are from 2009 or earlier. I quite like Modern Warfare 2, but not enough to call it GOTY.

My game of the year is a toss up between Borderlands and Batman: Arkham Asylum. I had quite a bit of fun with both games. Sadly, both are now sitting there, wishing that I'd pop them into my PS3 once again.

So you're tired of them? Couldn't you sell them and buy a new game then?

Dragon Age: Origins, it's one of the few games I've completed multiple times, let alone one of the few games I've completed multiple times this year. Everything about the game seemed complete and right, from the marketing to the initial release to the DLC. (On a side note, I have to give props to EA, their marketing this year has been original and excellent).

Also, I think DA:O is far ahead of the pack, honestly, I think picking a game to rank second to it would be much more difficult, Uncharted, Infamous, MW2, Batman: AA amongst a few others I can't think of right now, are all pretty even, each with their own strengths and weaknesses being taken advantage of by another.

Although I don't share your enthusiasm for music, let alone any single band, that's your game of the year, I can't really argue it can I.

Trying so hard not to flame. Between Guitar Hero even being in the running for 'game of the year' and the incredible over-rating of The Beatles (something that we've discussed before I think) and the union of these two money>quality products I don't know where to start so I'm just going to say RAWR.
It's not guitar hero, it's rock band. There is a distinct disparity between the quality of those two franchises. Mind you, I'm speaking as a fan of rhythm games, but Guitar hero has gone to shit, whereas Rock Band has consistently maintained a high level of quality which carried over to Rock Band Beatles. Oh, and The Beatles aren't overrated.

Rock Band, Guitar Hero, who cares. And the Beatles definitely are over-rated. They have one long album's worth (~15 songs) of good (or better) songs, and the rest of it is samey plinky plonky bullshit. Their biggest significance was in embracing modern hype and money making, effectively kicking off the modern pop machine with a template that hadn't been bettered 'improved' upon until reality TV came along and made 'stars' (and shit loads of money) out of even less creative and interesting people.
Well, no, when they started out they were simply a boy band who were in it for the money. However, with albums like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper, they revolutionized the concept of the LP - it's because of The Beatles that we have the "album"; they were the first band to create a record which was more than just a few singles surrounded by filler - yes, they were popular, but they were true musicians. Their last years as a band were spent entirely in the studio(and therefore not making as much money since they weren't touring, hence your assertion that they were simply in it for the money is wrong), experimenting with musical techniques that hadn't even been touched on before. The Beatles are one of the most innovative and (rightfully so) influential bands in musical history; without them, the bands that you like wouldn't exist, plain and simple. Their contribution to music is invaluable, and no other band has even come close. That is their biggest significance, not the irrelevant bullshit you were rambling on about. You may not like The Beatles, but the fact that you would doubt their importance to music as a whole is a level of ignorance that is absoloutely astounding.

Revolver's only a bit more than half an hour long and Sgt. Pepper's is 40 minutes! Not exactly much space to put filler in, and yet they manage it with shocking frequency. The fact they innovated with recording techniques and musical techniques is irrelevant to how good they actually were. If The Beatles hadn't happened, the bands that I love might well be different, but there would still be plenty of bands, and I'm sure I'd like some of them. I think Scroobius pip said it best when he said "The Beatles, just a band".
How good they actually were is a matter of opinion, what you questioned in your previous post was their significance, and in that category, the Beatles are the single most influential band in the history of music, and to suggest that they aren't is stupid and makes you look alarmingly ignorant of musical history.

Boys, boys, there's no need to argue! Instead of doing this, why don't you tell me your choices for GotY? I'd love to hear them.

My GotY would probably be Uncharted 2, as I've had more fun with that game than I have any other recently released game. That being said, I have yet to play Assassin's Creed 2 or Dragon Age: Origins, both of which I plan to buy soon. Regardless, I still think Uncharted 2 would be hard to top.

Sorry for derailing, Hubi, I just can't let a fanboy stand. My favourite game I played for the first time this year was Mirror's Edge, and since I played it on PC I guess it just slips into contention (released in January a little while after the consoles). It looks likely that had AssCreed II come out in time (again, for the PC) it would have probably taken my vote, though without having played it properly, I get the impression I'm going to like it less than the first game (less of a surprise, more annoying storyline).
The storyline from AC2 did indeed bump it down to inferior compared to the first game when the game thought a plot-twist and a cliffhanger would be a good idea. A least it became inferior to me. The whole experience felt wasted.

Mirrors Edge is a very fun game, I can understand why you'd pick that. I loved the moments where you ran around on shiny white rooftops. Sure, the parts in which you where in airducts and dark places underground where kind off boring, and the fighting kicked my ass in the end on hard (Which resulted in me having to sacrifice my "Test of Faith" trophy, something that made me a very sad person), but whenever I was mad at the game, I'd just start listening to "Still Alive" and play the first levels again.
