Likelihood of being able to interbreed with an alien species that evolved seperately on a completely different planet = pretty fucking low.
Some research suggests the Neanderthals didn't actually die out as such. We just interbred with them to the point that they effectively stopped existing as a seperate species.
And as others have pointed out, there are species on this planet similar enough to interbreed.
I don't know how close tigers and lions are genetically, or horses and donkeys for that matter, but it's a fact that they can cross-breed.
Point being, pedantry aside, given that there is very limited ability to interbreed with species that are very closely related, the likelihood of being able to interbreed with a species that developed seperately on a different planet = pretty fucking low.
