It's worst when I'm doing something without noticing and then I forget what I'm doing.
That happens to me alot in the kitchen, forgetting what I went in for, so just make something totally different then only remember what I wanted when I get back.

Edit:

Apparently when I fade out I get better at things.
Shit, I've defiantly had that, only particular things that are repetitive though.

FFIX the bit near the start where you do the fight scene and got to press the buttons that come up on screen, I forced myself to just get "zen" and do it without thinking.

Tekken/Tetris/Pacman is just a zombified state aswell. I'm sure there are alot more times aswell.
Hah! Definitely this, too. When I'm playing a game I know the tactics for by heart, I do it faster and better. I select my seeds for Plants vs Zombies with care, but as soon as the game starts, I space out and play with my subconscious. I know precisely what to do. If the zombies were invisible, I'd still beat the levels.

When I'm walking, I'll find my way to places while daydreaming, or thinking about something else. However, this might just be because I end up only half focused on pretty much everything, and I've just got used to doing stuff without thinking about it

i tend to focus on whatever i am doing, or else something will go badly wrong with it.

if i do phase out into autopilot for some reason, i will often forget what i was doing. i will not remember until either someone/something reminds me, or until some random point where i will suddenly remember for no reason.

Im on autopilot 90% of the day.
I would wake up at 4 AM (if I got any sleep) blink and be in a diner done with half my breakfast. Then while trying to go home I would end up at work and then work on my day off.

I also go into the kitchen while in autopilot, snap out of it and spend a few minutes thinking of how I got there and why I was there.

I also have a habit of becoming a tetris God while in that state.

I do my job like this!

I kid you not, much of my work period consists of my body automatically following a procedure while my mind tends to be elsewhere a great deal. Much of my life is half memories as well, if I have done something enough times I will just do it automatic, like the above mentioned tea making. This doesn't speak well for my job though, boring and repetitive tasks is all it is.

Pilots do this often while performing checks on their aircraft.
I know this from experience.
Sadly, and scarily, I don't doubt it.
