So my university is having a Humans Vs. Zombies game this week. I'm currently a human, sitting in a safe zone while waiting to get into my first class of the day. Is anyone else playing/has anyone else played in the past? What do/did you think about it? I have to say, it's pretty freakin' tense walking to class -- somehow, it's really scary when you don't see anybody who's playing, but you know they're out there somewhere.

Here's a link to the official site. It's basically a giant, zombie apocalypse themed game of tag, and it's mostly played on university campuses. You start out with three Zombies, whose goal it is to turn all of the humans into Zombies, and the rest of the players are human. The zombies turn humans by tagging them, and if they don't feed for 48 hours, they die and are removed from the game. The goal of the humans is to survive and starve all of the zombies to death. If neither event occurs by the end of the week, The zombies win if more than two thirds of the humans are turned, and the humans win if more than a third survive. Humans can temporarily stun zombies by throwing rolled up socks at them or shooting them with a nerf gun. I'm certainly enjoying it.

We had one called assassins. You signed up at freshers and get invited on facebook.

The game master would then PM people with targets, inc their course and pic. You have to take out your target, while not being taken out. You have 1 week to achieve your target. If you fail you are put on the wanted list. Anyone can take you out for bonus points. Its a combination of last man standing and points based.

You can sign up to become zombie police when you die, 1 day after you are taken out, you join the zombie police whos job it is to hunt the wanted list.

A few rules like your not allowed to take someone out in lectures and alike. Weapons wise you can use cardboard "knives", water pistols, one years someone go on top of one of the halls building and dropped a styrofoam "fridge" on them :)

We played a similar game last year which was called "mafia". The rules differed a bit. The murderers could take out whoever they wanted, but only one at a time and there were policemen (though no one knew who was the police either). The police could arrest one person a day each and they would have to say if they were guilty or not. The murderer's end goal was to kill the police and the police's main goal to arrest all of them. When we played it the police eventually won.

The general outline of the rules are in my previous post, but in addition, you use bandannas to show that you're playing and what side you're on. Humans wear it on their upper arm or, at some schools, their thigh. Active zombies wear it wrapped around their head, and stunned zombies wear it around the neck. One other thing that I didn't mention, the interior of all buildings on campus count as safe zones, no gameplay can occur inside of them, and zombies are stunned for 1 minute on exiting. This prevents people from interrupting lectures, and also gives the humans a chance to breathe. Vehicles, from cars to skateboards, also count as safe zones, but they can't be used to move around while playing; it's just to prevent people from getting pulled off their bike or hit by a car.

Now this sounds awesome; I'd love to play it.

I did once play assassins. It was anything thing big. It was at school with a large group of friends we played over a week on school where break times were playable time. One friend played on a large scale and said it was fun. Wish I had known about it.

Although zombies are cooler

I doubt any of you care at this point, but the game is over. The humans technically lost, as the tally after the final battle was 27 humans and 27 zombies -- way too few humans to equal a third of the total players, and about 27 too many zombies to equal total zombie death. The sad part is all the humans needed was another five minutes or so to kill the last few zombies, but we hit the time limit. Not to brag, but I was one of the 27 humans, putting me in the top 1.9% of players. My team was pretty badass, with three of us being in the 27.

Wow... In my University people are afraid to even look at each other, much less run around touching each other.

Sounds fun, I hope you get to repopulate the earth, ;)

What university are you at, if you don't mind me asking? It's just that I'm in the UK too, at Leeds Uni, and we have a similar society that I've just joined (sadly too late for the main game this term, but there's another one starting after Christmas and a bunch of stuff like Lazer-Quest and paintballing before then :p).

What University is this? This sounds uncannily similar to the game I'm playing at Cambridge. The only difference is that it's last man standing in autumn and spring terms. The summer term game is points-based though.

I just finished a game of humans vs zombies. It's a great game, although occasionally some of the rules here at my university are a little bit unfair. It is especially fun being a zombie though, you don't really have to worry about anything. Ever.
