This thread reeks of pretentiousness.

Jokes are jokes. If you can't joke about one thing then you can't joke about anything.

If you find a joke offensive then you are stupid.

This however is not a joke : e.g. HAHAHA JEW LOLZORZZ

An actual joke cannot be offensive due to the fact that it is a j o k e.
You hear about the new Israeli-made car we're importing?

It turns on a dime, and then picks it up.

...

Yes or no?

You'd think that, but you'd be very wrong.

Yeah, because telling someone their entire race, sex or genocidal suffering is a subject for your amusement can never upset them.

When you make jokes about something, you make that something into a joke. You had better not be making those jokes to someone who cares about or has endured that something, because nobody likes to be trivialized.

I shouldn't laugh, but I will.

OT: It depends on who I'm with, where I am, and who it's about when the joke is told.

If you make a joke about jews, say you're jewish first.

Same for blacks, mexicans, asians, etc.

It could be the difference is laughs vs boos, and posting vs banhammer.
How about not making racy jokes at all. If it's not okay for one person to do it, it's not okay for everyone.
What he/she/it said.

Which is the whole point of the first post. A cliff-notes version, if you will.

It really depends on if you make a joke about a specific case of genocide or just genocide in general.

About a specific genocide to someone who has been through that genocide is tactless, and it might offend them, but it shouldn't because it is a joke.

About a race or a sex is fucking fine because it's a generalization and if you let that get to you then you don't really understand jokes.

How are Irish jokes any more acceptable the Black jokes?

What an intelligent counter argument, you've really refuted my points and shown everyone how wrong I am haven't you?

The reason that people get offended is that while you may consider something funny, they do not share that humour, and hence don't.

Because people love racist jokes.

This is evidenced by the outrageous success of Dave Chappelle, whom I love dearly for having a multi-racial cast and making fun of everyone. He said that people should be able to laugh and joke openly about race, so we could all just get-the-f*ck-over-it already.
I can see the reasoning behind it but someone will almost always get offended by it. Making fun of a race or disability seems a bit of a low blow in humour though.

I always make it clear that I am not racist, I hate everyone regardless of race. My level of hatred grows exponentially with the other person's level of assholeness. It's a good system.

A joke can be offensive if someone takes it the wrong way. In high school people make fun of other people all the time and they are joking to impress their friends but offend the person they do not like.

I don't want to nitpick you too hard on this, because I agree with most of what you said, but... black humor? I'm assuming you meant racist humor, right?
Black humour/comedy is a particular style of comedy which focuses on making people laugh by breaking social taboos. 4Chan's renowned for it. If you want a prime example look to dead baby jokes.

Here's a moderator opinion (not the moderator opinion, of course).

I, personally, think that there is considerable truth in the "aggression theory of humor". The best kind of joke is transgressive -- something that dances on the very edge of acceptability, brings its audience to the brink of sadness and hatred and disgust, and pulls back. That's the kind of humor that really reveals something to the audience. It's also very hard to get right: go just a step too far and comedy does just turn to pure sadness and hatred and disgust, and you squander all the trust you've built up.

When interacting with strangers (e.g. on a large-ish Internet forum), most people are absolutely incapable of getting it right. They don't can't read where the lines are so they either pull the punch so hard that there's no humor there anymore or go sailing all over the place and creating negative reactions left and right.

Most people also joke selfishly. When they get a negative reaction, they start equivocating about how the onus is upon the audience to "take a joke" -- rather than the onus being on you to know how to make one in the first place. And then you get snippy arguments about who is entitled to tell other people how to feel.

So, when I see someone try to make a transgressive joke and fail miserably, Official Bad Stuff happens. It's a way of heading off that big ol' Internet argument about who gets to tell other people how to feel.

And, of course, sometimes folks fail so hard I'm not even sure whether it was supposed to be a joke anymore. We can't read your mind.

It's your responsibility to think before you post. Nobody else can do that for you. That applies to attempts at humor, too.

HA! And I'm an idiot. Yes, I am aware of black comedy but my expectations were thrown off by the rest of the post. Apologies for the confusion, I should take all definitions into account next time before posting.
It's cool.

They don't have to consider it funny to not be offended, they just have to understand that the person didn't mean anything by it.

The issue here is that it doesn't happen like that.

If they showed a disclaimer that they do not mean to offend anyone that would be a step in the right direction I think.

That would be a step in the anti-laughs direction.
