Well we should probably make a thread about this as it's looking like it's going to be a bad one. It's Category 4 right now and it'll probably go up to Category 5. These storms are the reason I would never live in New Orleans. The place is like a fishbowl and gets totally eviscerated when a strong hurricane comes by.

I was watching CNN and they said they weren't letting people take their pets on planes to escape. I felt so bad for all of the animals. I know if I couldn't get out with my dog I'd be crying so much. =(

Any hurricane makes quite a mess of wherever it hits, and I always feel bad for the residents of said destroyed area.

Gustav looks to be quite a mean one though.

The mayor called it "the storm of the century" and that "you need to be scared."

It's definitely not going to be pretty.

Ok, you know that "leave Britney alone" video? Imagine that but with New Orleans instead.

Seriously Hurricanes, hit someplace that doesn't matter like Crawford or New Jersey.

There are definitely other hurricanes, but New Orleans has had a spot of bad luck getting two of the worst ones within the span of a few years. Hopefully at least this time everyone will be evacuated.

They tend to hit Texas too. I remember when Rita was coming there after Katrina and everyone freaked out. I mostly remember it because I have a family member who died there. Not from the storm though, it ended up being weak, she died in a bus explosion - http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/03/national/main2059411.shtml

Except for that people are evacuating and the Democrats wouldn't take any blame as they're not in the White House. And I'm pretty sure Bush learned his lesson with Katrina.

If Bush learned lessons then he would know by now we aren't buying any of his BS.

Actually, I live in Southwest Louisiana, thankfully in Northern Louisiana right now for college.

Katrina was a bit of a media misnomer. The damage was extensive cause the levies broke. It was the natural water from the river that caused the flooding, not the storm surge or the hurricane damage itself. It was poor construction, no more, no less.

Oddly enough, Gustav is looking pretty nasty. But they always look nasty while they're in the Gulf. They're thinking Cat 4, which sounds about right. Really, the worst of the damage is going to be on the coast-line. It'll be a lot of wind, heavy rain, and maybe some tornado damage. Here's to hoping my house doesn't kick it somewhere between point now, and point after Gustav.

Honestly, bringing politics into natural disasters is like bringing a bucket to prevent a house from flooding. FEMA dropped the ball, which is the Director's fault, not the president.

And what they don't tell you? Insurance coughed up. After Rita, my entire house was paid for my insurance, new walls, floors, et al. All gratis from the insurance companies.

I'm a little worried for Gustav, but I don't think the damage is going to be the media madhouse it's being made out to be.

Unless the levies break again, but then that's just poor construction quality on the part of the "Chocolate" New Orleans. [http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/17/nagin.city/]

More to come, let's pray (if that's your thing) for my house, no?

Well he isn't praising an incapable FEMA director, which is the only thing he really can do wrong since he can't do much about the situation anyway. By now they probably have a better director there, or at least they should.

Not to detract from the horror or seriousness of the situation (well... too much...)

Since when were hurricanes not called after females? I was always taught that they were (though never given a reason why).

It alternates with the letters.

A - Male
B - Female
C - Male

or vice versa, depending on the year.

This year, Gustav and Hannah... Next year... Gertrude and Harry? Who knows?

Hey! That storm can hit Crawford but it must leave Jersey alone.

Some of my girlfriend's family (and their two cats) just drove up from NO today to stay with her. I looooove NO, though. Greatest city in America, I think. Really hope everything is okay.
