Ha. It dropped to a Cat 2 as soon as it hit landfall, now all we need to do is keep an eye out for are the tornadoes.

Bye bye, worry~

Hey Gents,
I'm over in England and the news here claims that only about 50% of New Orleans population has actually evacuated (last report I saw was about 12 hours ago).

Our weather service has reported the storm as a category 3 and unlikely to raise any higher. As the defences of New Orleans were designed to withstand Cat 3s, assuming they're all repaired from Katrina, flooding should be minimal.

Our news services are painting the warnings of the Mayor as a little alarmist to be sure he's not seen to repeat the mistakes of Katrina. Though I am glad to see them taking a threat to their citizens seriously.

EDIT: Checked the BBC site just after writing this; now looks like only 5% of the population remained to brave the storm. And the storm lost much of it's force on landfall, now a Cat 2 as a poster stated earlier. Looks like the worst fears aren't going to be realised.

My strongest good wishes for anyone in the area.

Well it didn't make me laugh because of the fact that it's a life threatening situation, however, it is still an out of the norm name.

It's definitely not as bad as they were making it out to be a couple days ago. I was under the impression it would be strengthened to a Category 5 in the Gulf and then hit land with at least a 3. It's a good thing that it died down as much as possible before hitting land.

Oh, and Gustav is a pretty badass name for a hurricane.

Actually, I live in Southwest Louisiana, thankfully in Northern Louisiana right now for college.

Katrina was a bit of a media misnomer. The damage was extensive cause the levies broke. It was the natural water from the river that caused the flooding, not the storm surge or the hurricane damage itself. It was poor construction, no more, no less.

Oddly enough, Gustav is looking pretty nasty. But they always look nasty while they're in the Gulf. They're thinking Cat 4, which sounds about right. Really, the worst of the damage is going to be on the coast-line. It'll be a lot of wind, heavy rain, and maybe some tornado damage. Here's to hoping my house doesn't kick it somewhere between point now, and point after Gustav.

Honestly, bringing politics into natural disasters is like bringing a bucket to prevent a house from flooding. FEMA dropped the ball, which is the Director's fault, not the president.

And what they don't tell you? Insurance coughed up. After Rita, my entire house was paid for my insurance, new walls, floors, et al. All gratis from the insurance companies.

I'm a little worried for Gustav, but I don't think the damage is going to be the media madhouse it's being made out to be.

Unless the levies break again, but then that's just poor construction quality on the part of the "Chocolate" New Orleans. [http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/17/nagin.city/]

More to come, let's pray (if that's your thing) for my house, no?
Exactly. Another reason Katrina was a mess was because Red Cross charity money was being misappropriated.

Well, they said, "Hey, show up for money." People who could show up the fastest were those with the most materials, functioning car, gas, etc. So those who didn't need it, got most of it.

At least insurance came through for us.
