So yeah, from the looks of it, the old team from back when Konami's head and rectum where in different locations seems to be coming back together for the firs time in 25 years to develop a spiritual successor to Suikoden. A lot of old Jrpg fans hold the series to high esteem and I know people for whom Suikoden 2 especially is their favorite Jrpg of all time, so I'm sure this is a momentous occasion. Personally, I got into this series super late, somewhere around late 2000s, but I did eventually go back and play 2 and 3 and I definitely loved both games, though 5 is still my fav. I'm just happy to see a modern day proper Jrpg using classic sprite artwork. Have super high hopes for this one.

I legit don't know how I'll last until 2022 haha. Apparently they're kickstarting this, gonna be up on the 27th. I feel safe supporting this one haha.

edit:

Here's an article with a lot more details and some artwork at the end. I love the concept art of that wolf boi.

edit2:

Here's an interview with one of the devs:

The thing about the terrain and party formation affecting gameplay sounds really awesome and I just love how they focused on sprite artwork.

Neato. Best of luck to them. My brother and I played a lot of Suikoden III back in the PS2 days.

Apparently they crashed kickstarter when it first got up because of how many people were on there. Also their stretch goals seem more or less humble so they won't be overloaded by making tons of money. Also there's some more vids and stuff in that page, they show a bit more of the fight with the kraken and also how the towns are. Also cats are back haha.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I really hope its good. I still have my copies of Suikoden 1 and 2, maybe still 3 also and I loved them. So far what little game footage they have shown looks pretty killer.

New stretch goals hint at a social link-type of bond system too. Man this keeps getting better.

I hope its as good as the one in Persona 4. At least for the main characters.

HOLY. SHIT. HYPE.

I started the series with Tierkreis, and while people don't seem to like that one much compared to the rest of the series, I quite enjoyed my time with it. It was one of my first full JRPGs that went over 20 hours in length, and the whole thing was quite exciting. Excellent music and storytelling, I think. Nice art too. It just needed a RUN BUTTON. Tried to get into Suikoden 1 and couldn't finish it. 2, however... 2 blew my mind. Still one of my favourites ever, to the point I have the True Rune of the Beginning tattooed on my right forearm.

Was sad to hear the series was dead. But, it seems it's not truly finished! And I am overjoyed to hear this is all coming together. I'm very excited for the devs who get to put this together. Sounds like the story is being done by the same guy who did 1&2, and the main characters sound very much like the protagonists of 2. Which makes me even more excited. Very much looking forward to this!!

The game is officially over 100 heroes now due to stretch goals haha. Also we unlocked guilds (onsen guild ftw!) and the ubiquitous fishing minigame. Over 2 million bucks so far and going strong.

Tierkreis and 4 are the low points in the series but even then they're still good games overall. And if you're not too much into Jrpgs when you first play it it'll blow your mind. Most people who played it were already with like a decade's or more of a history with Jrpgs so in that context it won't stand out as much.

Suikoden 1 has some dated systems, 2 is prolly the best in the series but 3 and 5 (my personal fav) are also excellent. Thing is, most people generally like em all even if they prefer one over the other. They're kinda in a class of their own.

Tierkreis was one of my first full length JRPGs, so I was pretty new to them at the time. They're my fave genre nowadays, but back then I didn't have much JRPG experience to work with. But the whole game kinda blew my mind back in the day, just as you said. I never experienced a JRPG with tons of hand drawn art, lots of voice acting, twists and turns, excellent music, animated cutscenes, and a really fun combat system. It was the perfect companion to the week long camping trip we took, and I've replayed it a few times since then. It just seriously... SERIOUSLY... needs a run button.

I could deal with 1 for the most part, but what ruined it for me was the dialogue and translation. It was AWFUL. I gave up riiiight around when the village of the elves got destroyed. 2 still gets a bit weird in terms of dialogue, but it got so much more love. Every last aspect of it was improved, and it was an incredible journey from start to finish. I still have yet to experience the rest of the series, but it's so rare and I don't want to turn to emulation. Maybe one day the 108 stars will align for me.

Considering that 2's writer is heading the story in this one, I am extremely hyped for the new project. And so far it looks gorgeous

I believe 3 was up on psn so if you have a sony console you could get that one at least. 3 has prolly the best story of them all because you have 3 protagonists in that one and you shift perspectives a lot. It gets really intricate and epic.

I agree that 3 had the best story/character also had an awesome OP
3 tactical battle were the worst, the basic idea is cool since you get to use your entire team and field like 40 character. But they were super easy and most of them were super scripted. 3 also introduced the skill system which helped make character more distinct and gave you a bit more customization. Sadly the gameplay is too easy so that drag it down.

4 just suck, it's not a real suikoden, it's just a generic JRPG. The setting is pirate island which is kinda cool, but the rest of the game just let it down. However, there's suikoden tactics that's using the same setting and actually have couple of cool ideas, much more worth playing.

5 was more of a return to form. I think the basic story is pretty cool but I found the writing pretty disappointing. Also it veered a bit too much into anime-e territory (like you have a little sister whose totally in love with you and such). Gameplay was great and it can even get a bit hard at time which gives a lot more weight to your choice in battle.

imo ranking of the game are 2>3>5>1>>>>>>>>>>>>4.

Those screenshots look really similar to Octopath Traveler.

Not saying it'll be similar in gameplay or whatever else; just the art style (artistically blurred foreground and background particularly).

The Kickstarter said:
Eiyuden Chronicle isn’t just a classic-style JRPG. It’s also full of adorable cats. Cats as far as the eye can see. Cats meowing, cats napping, cats exploring the world. Cats, cats, cats. CATS! Meow!
Sold.

One of the new stretch goals which is almost met is some sort of "top battle minigame"...so can I hear a beyblade beyblade!? (they call it bei-goma but come on XD)

Also they showed us pictures of the new chars we unlocked with the stretch goals, the first is a blond ojousama type in a pretty dress and the second is A SHARKPERSON WITH A FLAIL. Fun times.

You can see more about em here (can't seem to directly link it but you gotta hit the Updates tab and then go to the playwright's desk and read more):

I'm all about this. Can't wait to see his sprites.

Sold.
They mention multiple times that Octopath was an inspiration for them because it both showed how you can do a sprite jrpg in the modern era and that there was still a lot of interest in this sort of game out there. Though it seems to be more of a stylistic thing with how the overworld works and the rest is pretty firmly in the classic suikoden spectrum of game.

Bumping this topic because there's only 2 days left in the project. They're nearing 4 million dollars!

Also one of the goals unlocked is a dlc that will be free for backers (another one will be unlocked at 4m) and they're having a poll to decide the design of the 110th character from among 4 different artworks of a Kunoichi (cause yes, we have backed this to unlock up to 109 chars so far).

(voting for A here, also kinda want C though, not that B and DD are bad though)

This is shaping up to be on the top 5 most funded projects ever, mad hype. They'll be doing a stream tomorrow when the campaign is about to wrap up so check out their twitch if you have questions, sounds like they'll go for 4 hours.

Wow in a great surprise, this got so funded they're making 2 games now. The other game is a farming sim from the makers of Harvest Moon that will come out before the main game and will let you gather resources that can be carried over for the main game.

@Dreiko Have you played Alliance Alive? While I haven't played any of the Suikoden games, but as far as being able to find hundreds of characters to add to your crew it's right up the same alley.

I know the same guy who made suikoden made that series but I've not played it yet. If you haven't played suikoden though you do really wanna give it a shot. The early games are even on psn.
