I have some issues to deal with here, sometimes I'll pay a game or watch a film (seemingly) everyone said was great and find out it's a pile of shit, then I'll feel like 'the industry' tricked me into giving them money. Case in point, I didn't have the internet at the time so I assumed the truly godawful Cloverfield was all there was. Little did I know that on websites clues were being given that MIGHT have made it a little better, Was I the only one who saw the trailer and guessed it would be little more than amusing? well we were all wrong but I was less wrong than most, it sucked arse.
Also, as a sixteen year old boy I read twilight and begrudgingly admitted that, yes it was alright, but the thing is still going and I now despise it for replacing the two most awesome horror monsters with whining emo pricks.
I'm sure we all agree Harry Potter was quite good but hyping it up like people have just raises expectations and ruins a franchise.
so, um... yeah... forum... your thoughts on hype
NB: If you just want to slate twilight you're giving it more publicity so just go off and pull a Yahtzee or something)

Misplaced hype maks things appear worse in my opinion. Prime example Halo 3, it was ok, it wasn't the piece of god that it was hyped to be but it was alright. It gets a lot of shit though because it was so overly hyped.

Oh and Harry Potter was good up till No.4 The Goblet of Fire (which was pretty epic), The Order of the Pheonix and beyond sucked balls (the books not the movies, they all sucked).

I think that Avatar was ruined by the hype. I went to go see it the day it came out, so this was before everyone talked about it being the greatest movie ever. Plus I went to go see it with a bunch of friends, so that's always good for the experience. But anyway I really liked it leaving. And then the hype started up. This was the hype by everyone talking about this movie and never shutting up about it. I just eventually got tired of hearing about it. Also, when things get too popular, they start attracting idiots. See, I went to go see Avatar again after everyone raved about it. This time, there were a bunch of idiots just walking around and talking with their friends and basically being horrible moviegoers. This was a problem I didn't have the first time I saw it.

The only 2 reasons it could have been alright would be either:
1. You haven't read enough books to know better; or 2. You LOVE that sort of literature (which I'd like to hope isn't true).
Works exactly the same with movies, I've seen some shit poor movies when I was a kid that I couldn't make myself watch ever again.
Or 3. He has some opinions of his own instead of jumping on the bandwagon of saying it was awful without even giving it a chance. Myself? I watched the first half of the movie and it was probably one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. I didn't understand why it got so popular and why the fanbase would probably rip you apart for saying you don't like it.

the romance was good, But that's ALL there was. I did waver on loathing the main character for a while but overall I though it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone makes out. not, that is, until you have to sit through english with half a class debating is she should go with the vamp or wolf

I watched Burn After Reading. I found it horrifically unfunny in every facet of it's existence, and I don't understand why it got such rave reviews from critics.

I have to say, I liked this movie. Not loved or worth a repeat viewing, but it was fun while it lasted. However, I do have the same thing with "The Informant!" a monotonous trek through the life of a corn-seller. Or something. It got great reviews, and even an Oscar nomination, but I thought it was one of the worst films I have ever had the displeasure of laying my eyes on.

And like others said, Avatar has been ruined for me. I thought it was average when I saw it, then everyone started squeeling about it and begging the Academy to give it the Best Picture award. I really, really dislike the film now. The hype ruined it. Same goes for Halo 3, and Modern Warfare 2. The hype attracts idiots, who repel the people that may have liked it before.

First off: LittleBigPlanet is shit. End of story.
Second: TrueBlood is just... awful.
Third: Bioshock 2 is just Bioshock with different characters.

We all fall prey to hype at times, try as we might to avoid it.

My standard reply to hype threads:
<youtube=S6BJ3CvPLhs>

While hype can be good in that it lets people know about stuff they might otherwise have missed, in the end hype is just a mix of heavy advertising and overreacting fanboys. Both of those might be good to boost sales, but they're horribly annoying to anyone not a fanboy of whatever's being hyped.

People are most vocal about things when they say what they're told they should say (or if they're trying to say exactly what they think they aren't supposed to). If most of the people who hate Twilight read it without being told it was shite, they wouldn't post about it on the Internet nearly as readily.
