I love steam, I think its an incredible platform and I do think the competition from origin can only be a good thing. but The reason I am relieved EA has origin now is because it hopefully destroys their drm policies of the past. something nobody seems to be mentioning.

I just redeemed my retail copy of crysis 2 and Mass effect 2 on origin. its like steamworks for all EA games (a feature I love on steam as it is!) and if that means we never see the five CD key activation limits we saw on games like the original crysis... sign me the hell up!

EDIT: let me just reiterate; I like the possibility of competition yes. that was just me agreeing with what people have already said. the REASON I want origin is because it means I have more options with installing my EA games. no activation limit. which is something people dont seem to be talking about. EA have been terrible with their drm in the past and this is a step forward in that department. I hope companies like ubisoft go this route too.

Origin won't do much in terms of being competition for quite some time. They just don't have the library of games to do it. If they are focusing solely on EA game titles right now, then there is nothing for Steam to really put on sale to counter their prices at the moment, especially with EA titles disappearing off Steam like they are.

I won't doubt it'll lead to some good healthy competition, but not until Origin builds enough status for publishers to be willing to put their game on both Steam and Origin.

This, seriously. Origin has EA games, Steam has everything else. I lol at anyone who thinks there's any serious "competition" going on.

Origin's prices do seem seriously lower on several titles though.

Steam still has quite a few titles at release price even though it's been quite some time, at Origin they're less then half what they cost in steam.

Dragon Age 2 and Bulletstorm for example.

I hate to support EA, but they'll almost definitely get other titles into the catalogue. (Unless they want that plan to fail.) It will provide competition, however it will take a long time. Also there is no saying how competitive it will be exactly. (As was said in the podcast, steam took a long time to get to where it is...so will origin.)

Yeah we can distribute your cute indie title. Just sign here. What clause? Oh that. Yeah, we just need your soul. Don't worry about it. We probably won't do much with it. Hah, in fact, we usually just throw them away. Cypher, the name, Louis Cypher. Have a good day Sir, we'll be seeing you again shortly.

Btw, this won't be increasing competition. EA are making it very clear that they are willing to distribute on Origin alone. This is reducing the competition in the market (for EA games), not improving it.

competition is good but if I know anything about games (both the gaming aspect and the money aspect having a degree in finance) is that valve>EA because valve sees us as actual people while EA sees us as money cattle...at least until valve eventually takes the blizzard rout and makes world of halflife...

Competition doesn't work on this business model. When competition is done by attracting customers via lower prices, then yes, it's a big win situation for the consumer. EA are going by exclusivity. Neither EA or Steam need to undercut the other, and in fact the one doing the exclusives can charge more than normal because of said exclusiveness. So, bad for the consumer. So in this situation, competition is good is a lie.

Is Origins even supposed to compete with Steam? I've always assumed that it is meant to be a glorified version of EA's download manager thing. I can't really see many other publishers lining to get their games on Origin.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but Origin is just EA tacking on even more restrictive DRM measures on top of what they're already doing. Download limits. Limited CD key activations. Etc, etc. So, as far as that bit being a "relief", don't be fooled.

As for the "competition" part, I'm fine with that. At least I would be, if EA wasn't pulling this bullshit, juvenile smear campaign against Steam and Valve. I haven't heard word one from them about why I should be using Origin and what it's subsequent benefits are. Instead, I've heard nothing but, "Steam is evil! We're the victims! Look at how they mistreated us! The innocent "small" publisher. We can't work with them because we care about our customers and Steam won't let us do what we want! :'(" They just come off as whiny little brats who are quite literally lying through their teeth.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I'm so fervently against Origin at this point. (and BF3, even though I was very anxious to play) It's gotten so obnoxious at this point that it makes me ill just thinking about it. It's like EA is practicing to go into politics. Getting there mud-slinging skills honed in.

My problem with EA's origin is their TOS,EULA and limitions, and that EA thinks that we're money bags walking around wanting to be kidnapped, hogtied and then putting us on train tracks while a train is coming and after we get ran over they loot what's left of us.

I didn't see the point anyway. I would have thought that having EA games on Steam would have been a better model for them. Sure, EA might see more profits now from a game but now they have to maintain a service that distributes games digitally and lets gamers interact with each other outside of games, both of which cost money. Plus they have to draw in a market too. Steam has already had their's for a while and the majority of gamers there will likely find another game that they'd much rather play because they were informed about it on the homepage and comes with special offers like a reduced price than normal and pre-order bonuses.

TL;DR Origin has probably harmed EA more than it's helped them
