I kind of agree. Although on Reach I can kind of understand, not because CTF is particularly bad in any way, but because 8v8 Elite Slayer on Hemorrhage is every kind of awesome and I always pick it when the option is there. But that's only really because the combination of LOTS of Ghosts, a couple Revenants and Wraiths, and everyone having a plasma pistol as their secondary weapon means that the game is balanced and fun no matter whether you're in a vehicle or on foot.

But no, generally, objective games are more interesting IMO.

Halo is weird for this. Back in its week of release all I seemed to get was SWAT, and no one I ever spoke to liked SWAT, so why was it always chosen? Same goes for Infection. Luckily they have their own playlist now.

I generally rummage around Rumble Pit and Action Sack, because you get a fairly good mix of killing and objective in the same game type, like Hockey or Headhunter.

I definitely know what you mean. The Objective playlist in Halo: Reach pretty much always has under 1000 people in it. I freaking love that game, but I wish there were more people wanting to play objective gametypes. At least Invasion usually has a good deal of people on it.

The worst is at LAN parties, though. Where you have like the 6 hardcore people, the ones who supplied most of the equipment for the night and really love playing, and they want to play objective types. Then all the other people, the ones who barely play at all, start whining, "No, I don't waaana' play capture the flag... I wanna shoot guys! *pout*" It's fricking irritating.

I like objective games cuz it's easier to predict where people are gonna be.

Take Crysis 2 Crash Site mode on Skyline for example, there will be two or three people on the roof sniping/rocket sniping the objective at all times everyone else will be rushing the objective

Three easy stealth assassinations

It's actually much easier to get a good KD in objective games.

I'd invite you for some Bad Company 2 base capping but you're on the other side of the puddle...

The problem is exacerbated by the difficulty of coordinating with team mates you don't personally know.

I'd love to play games like Operation Flashpoint or Rainbow Six with people and actually be strategic. Sadly there is no way that's going to actually happen.
I hope you don't mean Rainbow Six's online, because that was the least tactical multiplayer I've ever played. (Speaking of Vegas 2 here, can't say for the others.)

I got most kills by just running and firing from the hip.

Yeah this is true, but i found the spawning in TDM CoD 4 and MW2 to be so easy to predict, I would constantly flank back around and most of the time they were to busy just all running in circles to notice until it was too late. I found the majority of my score was not based on twitch reflexes but just the ability to watch the spawn patterns then double back to confuse the other team (then twitch reflexes).

yes, brink it will be awesome but it is coming out 3 days before my 5 weeks of exams.

OT: I don't really play deathmatch much so I don't really get sick of it, when I think of it deathmatch is the game mode I play the least.

I would say go play KZ3. But that's becoming more and more K/D orientated as it's ageing. I's getting harder and harder to find a game where people play it properly.
I stopped KZ2 because people couldn't play it properly, 10-20sec life expectancy grenadefest.
It's hard to find a decent full team fps that uses ballistics where your "team" isn't just as responsible for your deaths as your enemy is.

What annoys me is people who go into objective modes and still just care about kills. Search and Destroy in MW2 is basically unplayable now as all I ever find is a bunch of quickscopers camping out their spawns, even when the bomb has been planted, or the bomb carrier is also one of the campers and does not move the entire game.
People usually do this so they can make easy kills. As the main focus is on the objective, people pick a nice comfortable camping spot near the objective and K/D boost away! IMO if it helps your team doing this I think it is not that much of a problem, but randomly killing people at FFA oddball for example is just straight down annoying, if not trolling.

I have noticed that most objective games are lightly populated mostly due to games insistence on ranking you by KD, so everybody wants that so they can 'one up' the anonymous masses of the leaderboards.

This leads to a problem in games like Black-ops; almost all of the objective games i have played are filled with the despised elements of FPS play; quickscopers, serial campers, etc. Even though it is an objective lobby these players are still only interested in a high KD or getting kills for youtube montages so the entire point of the lobby is missed.

Me personally, I don't mind deathmatch but thats because my objectives are always about my character; I will play to get a certain weapon/armour piece or unlock the advanced versions of perks, i couldn't care less about other players as long as i can get my personal objectives done.

I notice this more on console than PC, but it seems like the vast majority of FPS multiplayer is straight up team deathmatch. Do people lack the mental fortitude to do anything other than point and click at bad guys? I'm getting so incredibly sick of playing deathmatch.

I play almost exclusively on PC, but I occasionally play some Halo Reach. Tonight I was playing some Halo and played 13 Slayers in a row despite not being in a slayer playlist. Yes I could have gone to an objective only playlist, but there are only 1 or 2 of them and they are only 4v4 and they have almost no one in them. I wanted to play 8v8 CTF or anything other than slayer.

Every single time, Slayer gets at least 60% of the votes and we up playing it.

I just don't understand how these people can enjoy playing slayers exclusively. Especially when you have large maps, vehicles, and a couple of flags. Not to mention the bevy of other non slayer gametypes there are.

So why is this? 10 years ago it was all about the CTF and teamwork. Games today reward you for being selfish and sometimes even reward you for interfering with and/or stealing kills from your team-mate. I've yet to see regular pub team play on consoles. And on PCs it's only prevalent in some games like TF2.
Shooting the other guy seems to be the primary source of multiplayer fun. Is it really shocking that the one thing that keeps people coming back is the most popular element?

Put another way, I don't think we'd have anywhere near the same mp focus if people didn't enjoy shooting each other over and over.

It's all about KD for them I do like CoD's set up where if you don't want to play DM and don't have to and even when voting comes into play people actually vote more on what map they hate then the game type

A better question to be asked would be "How do people enjoy multiplayer at all?"
This. I don't mind multiplayer, but sometimes a good singleplayer is more enjoyable. Mostly because you can immerse yourself in the world to whatever extent you choose.

OT: I don't mind Slayer Dethmatch, let me guess. You played an extreme amount of Elite Slayer right? It just wasn't your day man, I was "forced" to play Elite Slayer four times in a row and I hate it!
I get forced into multiplayer CoD matches a lot so I've bred a seething hatred for multiplayer as a whole. I'm good for co-op though.

Also. why are you playing Halo if you want a team based game?

Halo is notorious for having a large percentage of Rambos.

Two words: Kill streaks. Or wait is that written as one word? Eh who cares.

Play Homefront. I've heard it's got Great Objective based multiplayer. Plus it doesn't ONLY reward for killing. You get points for EVERYTHING, from spotting enemies, to capturing flags to piloting gunships. That should encourage people to play more cohesively as a team, maybe? I dunno though since I haven't played it. Just passing on what I've heard.

I would like to disagree with this. I was playing Battlefield Play4Free (Hey! Don't snicker at my poverty!) recently, and in one of the large maps, US forces start out on an off-shore Air craft carrier. And within 20 seconds of game start, a couple teams will hop onto the blackhawks, another will roll towards shore in amphibious APCs, while the competent Pilots will immediately dust off with the F35s and Apache's, and start gaining Air dominance over the map.

By the time you get to shore (within 40 seconds) The choppers are touching down behind flags/points, Tanks are barreling down streets and Aircraft are screaming past, dogfighting across the map. It's a surreal experience. Seriously try it.

Long story short, it is the most immersed I have ever been in a shooter. And it's FREE. it's a ***** to get into the match. But it's FREE, so you can't complain :3
