Talk to everyone and build up your stats for conversations, but don't do what I did and ignore your combat stats.
DON'T take the trait that reduces you to one perk every four levels.
STAY AWAY from the area west of your starting location until you're a great fighter.
MOVE FAST.
STAY AWAY FROM THE GLOW until you're asked to go there, TAKE RADAWAY.
On your first run, make a small gun specialist. AGILITY IS YOUR FRIEND.
That should keep you alive. Good luck.

also, be sure to get rid of any party members after about Junktown or the Hub. they'll just be a liability beyond that point (especially good ol' "Shoot you in the back" Ian).
I'd hit Gamefaqs mate, some great advice on the boards and they have FAQS too (shock!)
I tried and tried after playing Fallout 3, but just couldn't get past the random encounters and just dying in one hit from a group of super mutants, or dying from a group of rats, because 8 of them get to hit me before I can hit one of them back, then 7 of them hit me and I die.
It's a well loved game however and don't let me put you off, I'm sure I'll keep trying and maybe I'll get some advice here to help me enjoy it more too!

Beware of Deathclaws and when asked to go to the Glow, take LOTS, and I do mean LOTS of RadAway and and RadX with you.
