You are basically asking why gamers are more willing to put up with crappy products than they would with other items, yes?
Impatience, a generation of people who want instant gratification (myself included, I am terrible with it) and a lack understanding of the value of money and consumer rights. Combined with an online culture that belittles anybody for voicing a complaint that is not in line with popular thinking.
Is my generalised perspective of it. I suspect subliminal messaging probably has a certain impact as well. We no longer seem to want things, so much as feel that we "need" them.
Fair enough, we are indeed an instant gratification kind of people but I'm more of the Long Term Gain Short Term Loss type of mentality. I'm getting my diploma for High school by the end of this coming year(At 24) going on to Univeristy with hopes of Med school, so I'm looking at 8 years of studies+5 years of Residency if I follow through with Radiology as my end goal. So I'm looking at 14 years down the road on that front.(which is why I have a hard time saying the Xbone's DRM is a logical choice it seems like Long Term Loss Short Term Loss) Same train of thought for the PS4 and Xbone. Xbone is not going to be supported indefinitely. I've heard it compared to the Snes, which is pathetic. I can still plug in my Snes and play LTTP any day of the week anywhere in the world with a tv and a power supply. The Xbone? Servers fail, humans make mistakes, consoles can die. ACCOUNTS CAN GET BANNED. Yeah, no one seems to have thought of that one. I remember when EA was throwing out bans from Origin for Forum Posts. Fucking FORUM POSTS got you BANNED FROM GAMES YOU PAID FOR that weren't MMO's. Don't try and tell me this isn't a possibility. But, that's getting off topic, sort of.

The irony is, Steam does it while making many people happy with various sales the fact that the DRM in place isn't horribly invasive and you can download any game you purchase to any drive and play it. Ultimately, steam might fail some day, they aren't perfect, but I'm more likely to trust Steam who hasn't tried to fuck me over yet over Microsoft, who have a terrible track record(Just this past half decade alone.)

See, the funny thing here? I won't be buying an Xbox One, because I can't "live with that".
^This is basically why I'm not touching one. Even stripping away all the DRM, I don't want Kinnect, I don't like Motion Controls. The Wii is a prime example, I nearly didn't buy one. But a handful of games that I liked made the purchase worthwhile, they didn't make use of stupid motion controls and I was happy with that. But, then they brought out Skyward Sword. Beautiful game, pretty interesting premise, challenging at times, fun over all. But FUCK motion controls. The hardest challenges I had were anything that had to be killed with Stabbing.
Until such time as they remove the mandatory daily online check-in, I won't be purchasing an Xbox. I've never purchased online passes for used games I've bought, I've never used microtransactions and only buy DLC I think is a significant enough addition, such as the cases with Mass Effect, Dishonored, or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and I wouldn't have bought Diablo III. I don't actively give money to companies in direct support of policies that appear to pose the supposition that all customers can be simultaneously treated like criminals and fleeced for cash -- And I phrase it that way simply because I've bought Starcraft II and spent an inordinate amount of money toward World of Warcraft
I got D3 because of the Opt In bit with WoW, so I'm in your boat too. I enjoyed WoW for what it was, had a chance to get into it. Was doing well but always fell in the shithole guilds and never got anywhere despite being a pretty top class raider. Was able to pick up Heroic Dragon woman...thing who's name escapes me after two attempts.(Though we only slayed her after another 3 hours because other people weren't quite so quick.) I'll admit originally at first I felt D3's always online DRM was fair given the RMAH, boy I was an idiot(I'll freely admit that now) and it's kindof funny in retrospect. But looking at it now and looking at the Xbone and how much it infringes on seemingly basic "rights" it's impossible for me to NOT see it becoming a debacle once Anonymous gets a hold of it. OOOOooooo, can't wait for that.
They are luxury items. And it's because of that I won't be giving Microsoft the luxury of my money, because they're going to actively impose on how I can use said luxury item if I purchase it. I won't stand for that.
This basically sums up everything I feel about it. I don't differenciate between a 50,000$ purchase and a 500$ purchase when it comes to a luxury item. If you restrict what I can do with my property that ISN'T a mandatory part of my existence, I'll take my business elsewhere. Simple as that.
